Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe reacts to draw with Watford

Eddie Howe felt the linesman "made a very brave and correct call" by flagging for Bournemouth's first penalty in their 1-1 draw against Watford this afternoon.

Referee Carl Boyeson initially didn't signal for a spot-kick when Lewis Grabban was tugged back in the area, only making the decision after his assistant flagged.

After Gabriele Angella had been sent off, Grabban scored from 12 yards but was to be denied by Manuel Almunia when the Cherries were awarded a second penalty later in the second half.

“The first one I had a clear view and I thought it was an out and out, stonewall penalty,” said Howe of the first penalty incident.

“He grabbed Lewis and he got fouled and the linesman has made a very brave and correct call in my opinion to help the referee out there.

“The second one I had no view of it - I saw Marc Pugh go down and it looked like he was going to tap the ball in the net so my first emotion was it must be a penalty but without seeing it again I can't tell you.”

While Grabban converted the first spot-kick to celebrate signing his new long-term deal at the club with a goal, he couldn’t repeat the feat second time around.

“Sometimes it's difficult to take two penalties in the game,” his manager remarked. “You get the mind games with the goalkeeper and I thought what made it more difficult was the delay between the two penalties.

“It's never easy when there's that long delay before having to take it and the keeper made a good save not only from the penalty but also from the two follow-ups. They were world-class saves.”

Having made the decision to award the second penalty, there was some surprise that referee Carl Boyeson did not follow this up by sending a second Watford player off. Instead, he chose to show Almunia a yellow card.

“Our players were incensed,” said Howe. “They felt it was a second red card - I don't know if it was the defender [Fitz Hall] or the goalkeeper from my view but if it is the goalkeeper then he has to go but we can't change it now."

While tempers sometimes threatened to boil over on the pitch, the Cherries boss also acknowledged there had been some tension on the touchline between the respective campas.

He said: "You don't like to see it [time wasting], you want to concentrate on the football, that's always my thought.

"Rolling around on the floor and trying to break the game up and there was a lot of aggro on the benches which is unlike us. We're football people and we just want to concentrate on the football.

"Unfortunately today it got a bit messy but I just want to talk about the game really."

Bournemouth were thrashed 6-1 at Vicarage Road in August and were also knocked out of the Capital One Cup by the Hornets.

Asked his reaction to the result, Howe replied: “Mixed because I thought we were very good again with the ball and we dominated the ball for the majority of the game and against a team like Watford who try and do that to you I think it's no mean feat.

“If you compare this to the two games against them previously it's been a lot tighter and it's swung in our favour so we've shown how much we've improved.

“We created a number of chances and even in the first half we had two or three really gilt-edged opportunities.

“Marc Pugh had a one-on-one, Matt Ritchie struck just over and we've been done with a sucker punch just before half-time which was a killer blow for us.

“But the response from the players was really good in the second half - I was really pleased with the second-half performance and we should have won comfortably in the end.”

It should have been a second red card- but to Pugh for diving!

The ref was in a perfectly good position to not give anything and was talked into it, shows what the lino saw when they sent of Angella!
Unbelievable, from Steve Cotterill's nice comments last week to this tripe from Howe!

Howe should wait to see it on TV before commiting himself. No class unlike Sannino who is happy to wait for a second view. Howe will look silly if Angella's red card is rescinded but also if it is obvious his player fell/ dived for the second penalty. The officials should be sent to Siberia. Good rear-guard action and probably the right sort of warm up for Man City. Luv the Horns!

I think Howe is a good guy, but during the heat of the game Managers in the main lose their objectivity in the heat of the battle. But then so do we supporters and of course every one is biased towards their own team. But yesterday doesn't mean Howe is a bad guy.

In terms of the incidents the first was a clear penalty and the linesman was right to flag. We had a similar situation against Millwall on Boxing Day when he too got it right.

For the second one I am convinced that Fitz Hall played the ball and not the man. In the heat of the battle as I said people lose their objectivity. Clearly in my opinion though the referee lost control and got his decision making wrong for the second one. Also if he is not sure who it was he shouldn't send anyone off, and CERTAINLY not make a scapegoat of someone as he did with Angella.

My worry with our team at the moment is that in desperation to get results continued player changes in attempting to correct it is making it worse. The players Nani seems to be wanting like Diakiti, have not done it. If you look at QPR fans response to him as a player, then it is not favourable, and I always think whilst it is often divided opinion about players, supporters do know the good one's from the not so good players. After all they see the players week in and week out.

I remember GT going to watch Mo Johnston at Partick and standing with their fans with a big coat and flat cap so he couldn't be recognised, but used the supporters around him to 'get their opinion'. He signed him and though he was trouble off the field, on it he was deadly and he played a big part in our recovery and run to the FA Cup Final that year.

So in my view, I would like to see the management work with the players we have, to get a better team understanding and spirit amongst them and to move towards more team performances rather than relying on individuals.

Fabbrini hasn't scored too many and he is our second striker. Can they work with him on the training pitch to get into the penalty area more and to be more composed with his finishing. Fessi too, should have got more than he has, again more composure from him is needed. For all the complaints about McGugan, without his assists and goals we could be in the bottom 3. We have had an awful run of results and it seems to me that chasing that play off place is not helping us. They need to concentrate on getting better team performances in general and not just yesterday where I know the players dug in. Players in and out do NOT help that continuity. Like us all in our work, we like to be valued and then they get the best out of us. Battocchio is a real team player and has showed lots of guts and determination and always gives his all for the TEAM. I like him and his attitude and he deserves more playing time in my opinion.

I applaud Sannino for the way he is handling referees by showing lots of respect. In the end Ref's are human and when it comes down to it human nature will mean that they will sub logically gives us decisions if we are not continually moaning about them. I'm sick and tired of Managers blaming referees for the results. Ranting and raving has never done any good in my opinion though it is so easy for any of us to get like that. We need to look beyond.

The other thing is. PLEASE CAN SOMEONE POINT OUT THE PERSON(S) USING FLARES SO THE CLUB SO HE CAN GET THEM BANNED FOR LIFE. One they are dragging our good name down, and 2 I am beginning to feel unsafe travelling to our away games and may stop going until they get rid of these total idiots who shouldn't be welcomed in our football club.

It should have been a second red card- but to Pugh for diving!
Pen No. 1

How can it take the officials over 2 mins to decide it was a clear goal scoring opportunity. Ergo not that clear after all.

Angel - spot on for the second. Fitz took the ball away from Pugh and there was no contact other than this and none whatsoever with Manuel. Then belatedly out comes the swan dive from the Klinsmann cheats manual.

Pugh opted for the per centage gamble of not having a good angle and a defender covering and put his arms up above his head to break his fall. If he had his legs taken away, as refs are told his hands would be in front of his chest.

Pugh is a cheat - end of.

Like most have commented I did like Howe but when did he transmute into Colin W?

First one the ref didn't see ANYTHING, lino flagged for a shirt pull (Hall), Ekstrand tackled/fouled their player a split second later - that's not brave Mr. Howe, that's awful officiating because Ekstrand was further ahead of Hall when he tackled the player so not last man (Hall) but after all that he sent the wrong player off anyway!

Second one was a blatant dive, so blatant the normally placid Watford supporters were going ballistic.

Done now but after dominating the game for 30/35 minutes then scoring on the cusp of half time it was ruined by the officials.

I hope karma comes back to take a bite of the Cherries next week when Suarez is in town.

I think the point to be made here is that Watford have been warned by the FA about the use of flares by the crowd, and threatened with sanctions. Do you really think that when deciding to levy the fine or potential 'behind closed doors' orde and worst case points deductions - however unlikely (which I am sure they will enjoy doing) against watford they will be bothered with the finer details of the fact that it was a smoke bomb....I think people on here are rightly concerned that this will get us more unwanted attention from the authorities...who seem he'll bent on making scapegoats of Watford FC.

You can have and show passion without needing to resort to smoke bombs, flares or whatever....We have been warned. As a club Watford need to tread carefully, and our fans should respect that and look at the bigger picture is all I am saying. What price that smoke bomb if the FA orders is to play a couple of games behind closed doors?? Just saying
