Watford dumped holders Norwich City out of the FA Youth Cup after a superb 3-1 win which earned them a fifth round tie at home to Liverpool.

It took less than a minute for the hosts to open the scoring when Alex Jakubiak drilled the ball home. Watford extended their lead through Josh Doherty's penalty and a remarkable first 23 minutes continued when George Byers' thunderous strike made it 3-0.

Norwich pulled one back in the second half through Rhys Browne's close-range effort but Watford held on to seal a memorable cup scalp.

The Hornets got off to a dream start after taking the lead in the 39th second of the game. Tom Rosenthal sent in a cross and Jakubiak swept the ball home from close range.

It got even better for Watford when they were awarded a penalty after a foul on Jakubiak. Doherty stepped up and tucked away the spot kick to make it 2-0 after just 14 minutes.

The Canaries created their first chance through Browne's header but his effort was straight into the arms of keeper Daniel Wilks.

The rampant Hornets made it an almost unbelievable 3-0 after just 23 minutes when Byers struck a superb long-range shot which cannoned in off the post.

Norwich desperately needed a spark to get into the contest and they forced another effort on goal through Jamie Eaton-Collins but his strike was held by Wilks.

The holders went close to getting on the scoresheet but Carlton Morris' cross was flicked just wide by Browne before the break.

Watford made a bright start to the second half and Harry Kyprianou found himself in a dangerous position but his cross was too close to keeper Ben Killip.

The hosts made their first change when Dennon Lewis was introduced in place of the lively Rosenthal.

Norwich's pressure finally paid off after the hour mark when Kevin Lokko's header was turned in from close range by Browne.

Watford made a second substitution when they brought on Matthew Hall for Jorell Johnson.

The Canaries were finishing the match strongly and should have added a second but Eaton-Collins fired over the crossbar.

The Hornets went close to adding a fourth goal but Lewis' low shot was saved by Killip.

Watford did not have too many scares late on as they ended the holders' defence and sealed a tie against Liverpool in the next round.
