Watford throw away two-goal advantage to lose 4-2 at Nottingham Forest in the Championship

Gabriele Angella’s double was not enough to give Watford a much-needed Championship win against Nottingham Forest as the Hornets squandered a two-goal lead to lose 4-2 at the City Ground.

The Hornets looked to have sealed a valuable three points and a morale-boosting away win as they led 2-0 early in the second half but a remarkable turnaround saw Billy Davies’ side score four goals in the last half an hour to flip the game on its head.

It was the second time in as many matches the Golden Boys had been two up and lost but this result, which leaves them 16th in the table and 13 points away from the play-offs, willl clearly have hurt a lot more than the defeat at Manchester City.

Angella put Watford ahead in the 33rd minute and just two minutes into the second half, the Italian added his third goal in as many games, nodding home Sean Murray’s cross to put the visitors in the driving seat.

Forest looked dead and buried but Simon Cox came off the bench to give his team a lifeline just before the hour-mark and from then on it was one-way traffic.

Former Watford striker Darius Henderson headed home an equaliser before Jamie Mackie and a second goal for Cox made sure the hosts’ comeback was complete.

Watford made only one change to the line-up that started against Manchester City as Manuel Almunia returned, replacing Jonathan Bond in goal.

Beppe Sannino stuck with the 3-4-2-1 system that paid dividends for 45 minutes against Manchester City the week before with Ikechi Anya and Fernando Forestieri playing just behind Troy Deeney.

It was Deeney who had the first chance of the contest as Daniel Pudil broke down the left and fizzed a pass inside to the Hornets frontman who, after a neat interchange with Anya, shot narrowly over from the edge of the area.

In the 11th minute, Forest very nearly broke the deadlock as Andy Reid’s free-kick found its way to Danny Collins but the centre-back’s header crashed against the crossbar.

Angella’s first attempt of several at the Forest goal came soon after as he found space from a corner but his hooked shot flashed wide and, from another corner, the centre half went close again but was unable to connect with a header.

The first quarter of an hour was largely dictated by Forest who focused their attacks down the flanks but, having nullified the hosts’ early threat, Sannino’s side gradually grew into the game.

Forest’s Jamie Paterson interrupted a temporary lull in the match with a driven left-footed shot into the hands of Almunia and moments later, Davide Faraoni was gifted possession on the edge of the Forest box but his shot was deflected behind.

It was from the resulting corner in the 33rd minute that the Hornets opened the scoring as Angella again met a corner first and this time he made it count with a superb right-footed flick which went in off the underside of the bar.

Moments later the Hornets could have doubled their lead as Forestieri weaved his way into the Forest box but instead of squaring for Deeney who was free, the Argentine hesitated and the chance was lost.

Forest were on the back foot but the home side had the best opportunity so far in the 37th minute when Reid’s cross found Greg Halford completely free in the area but the Forest man headed harmlessly over.

Watford though were undoubtedly finishing the first half the stronger side and Forestieri should have done better on the counter attack when the visitors had a two against one but his pass to Anya was cut out.

Forest came out of the blocks quickly in the second period but within two minutes of the restart, it was Angella who ghosted unmarked into the penalty area before heading home Murray’s delivery and doubling Watford’s lead.

Reid continued to be at the heart of most of Forest’s attacking threat and his rasping free-kick from 25 yards out had to be tipped over the bar by Almunia not long before the hour-mark.

In the 58th minute, Forest hauled themselves back into the match when a deep cross from the left found Guy Moussi at the back post and the tall midfielder did well to head the ball across goal for Cox to tap in from close range.

Sannino reacted immediately, replacing Forestieri with Almen Abdi as Watford dropped into a more defensive 3-5-2 formation but the goal injected life into the home side who were now enjoying a sustained spell of pressure.

As the Watford boss slipped over in the mud on the touchline, his team’s control of the game was slipping too and in the 73rd minute so it proved as Forest drew level.

Reid was predictably the provider, crossing in for Henderson, who had come off the bench minutes before, to head past Almunia and make it 2-2.

Only 14 minutes after entering the field, Abdi had to go off and the midfielder was replaced by Marco Cassetti. With ten minutes to play, Sannino made his third and final change as Diego Fabbrini came on for Anya.

Forest’s subs were the ones making the difference however and their comeback was complete as Jamie Mackie became the third replacement to score in the game, nodding home past Almunia to give the hosts a dramatic lead.

Watford desperately searched for an equaliser in the closing minutes and Sannino pushed Angella up front to try and carve out the decisive chance.

In the end though, the only late goal in the game went to Forest as the Hornets’ defenders were drawn to the ball on the right and Cox was left unmarked at the back post to drive the ball into the far right hand corner to seal the win.

Well that's the honeymoon period over. Cant understand if Fitz Hall is on the bench, why Sannini didn't bring him on for either Ekstrand or Angila both had yellow cards so were clearly holding back, in fear of second yellow. Why bring on Cassiti and not Merkel ? There was no holding in mid field, two goals up hold the ball take the sting out of the game. Henderson comes on with clear intent of pushing our defenders why didn't Sannini bring on Hall. Both Murray and Battoico were tired in the last 20 mins again no subs I know Abdi came on and got an injury . so change the formation. Oh I give up bring on Brighton, I think the City game took to much out of our mid-field.

Dreadful display after their first goal - If we continue to play in that manner were heading one way and it aint up! Poor organising, poor defending, no motivation or leadership. Defending too deep. Basic stuff. Made Forest look good and we let an ol timer like Endo in on it.

Just what the hell is going in behind the scenes ?

Centre midfield absolutely dreadful again. Murray goes missing for long periods of every game. Can't do that in his position. Defensively abject. 2nd goal Reid received the ball from a throw in with the freedom of the pitch. Pathetic. Poor passing, poor defending, no pressure, no fight. This is getting embarrassing. 1 win in 4 months, which was against 10 men. Big trouble

Just got back from the game (I live local). Honest opinion here - first half we did OK. In my opinion Murray looked good, ran the show for us in midfield and we looked solid at the back (barring a few needless yellow cards). We didnt create much, but then neither did Forest and we were good for our lead. Big credit to the boys standing at the back left who kept the noise going solidly for the whole of the half.
Second half Forest came flying out of the blocks as you would expect, but after a few dodgy moments we got a nice breakaway which led to the second. I have to be honest and say that from there on until Forests 3rd goal we were given a lesson in possession football. Murray and Battochio completely dissapeared. Poor old Lloyd gave the ball directly to opposition on numerous occasions and even when Abdi came on (albeit for hardly any time at all - it took me a while to realise he had gone off !) we still looked a mess across the middle of the park - couldnt keep the ball for 2 passes never mind 3-4. If we had managed to hold on for another 5-10 minutes before they got their first it might have been different, but after that it was backs to the wall stuff. Deeney was isolated and anonymous, we sat far too deep, didnt push out when clearing the ball and lacked movement when we had it. Only after the 3rd goal did we offer a threat and Deeney seemed to come back to life, but it was too little too late. The 4th was salt in the wound. My opinion - we are just far too lightweight - cant accomodate Faraoni and Foresteiri at the same time. I hope Tozser is the business because we really need someone who can win the ball and then not give it directly back to the opposition. This could be a long hard season from here on in.

Pathetic second half performance. When is someone at the club going to realise that we need an experienced championship player in centre midfield who can influence the game and the team around him. We keep signing short term loan nobodys who play a few crap games and then disappear.

Defending from set pieces and crosses was woeful. Too many players not giving it for the shirt - no strength, no desire from too many players who just fall over at the slightest touch and try fancy flicks and tricks.

Get a grip quickly or we are going down - absolute garbage tonight

Strange that Granada have had Spanish managers since 2007 and until recently a largely home grown squad and yet we have just diluted our squad with a huge number of players not suited to this competition.

Either Nani and co do not understand the requirements of this league or the Pozzos don't see the value in investing in young British players that they can sell on for a profit after a few years.

British players may be expensive but they have the potential to contribute more to the side and will have a higher sell on value - isn't that the Pozzo model?

If the window brings nothing more we have to get Fitz and Nos back in the side, pick players with character, we need them.

Still, we will prob sign another couple of Serie A rejects tomoro, who won't be fit for two months or so.

As bad a half of football under the Pozzos. Sadly we are too light weight and how many simple passes did Batty fail to make. Always stood by Joel but he was nowhere tonight and Pudil exposed well by Forest. Agree Murray goes missing too much to have a major impact.
Awful to see Almen go off but why did he stay on so long when injured in the first couple of minutes, No idea why Marco came on, negative move.

The most frustrating thing for us I'm sure was that as soon as they got 1 we knew what would happen.

Perhaps the biggest surprise was Doris not celebrating his goal, he did say he wouldn't but that was years ago, so fair play to him.

We are now looking down the table with a touch of anxiety . . .

I have the funny feeling that the beppe Sannino experiment will end at the end of his contract as things stand in May in my honest opinion.. Take away the cups with Manchester and Bristol Cities, our results in Beppe's first 6 games have got worse since Zola left. there is hardly an improvement.

Just hoping we get a striker in tomorrow or this will end badly, but wont get us relegated. We need a leader that is a proven championship manager material as this one is just not working out how I would hoped it would be. Frustrating to see the likes of Brighton and Leicester who were in the play offs last year doing so so well and we are just faltering like there is no tomorrow. Its alarming to see the postion we are in compared to last season..

lets hope for a better game against brighton on Sunday.

Another very disappointing overall performance.....no fight, no heart and relegation looms. The team kept giving the ball away over and over again. Pathetic. The so called midfield were awful. The experiment with so many non-British players is not working and most of the team looked dis-interested. Last year we added some excellent players to an average Championship squad and it worked. This season the club have got rid of the British players and simply replaced them with untried, unknown and very average footballers who are not suited to the Championship. Why does it appear to be a crime to buy home grown players? Disappointed to see Thorne going to Derby on loan for the rest of the season. Also why is Hall not playing? It is clear the team need pace up front, a holding/physical central midfielder who can pass the ball forward and not to the opposition, full backs who can run/pass and actually defend and some passion. Finally, when you get two goals up which are frankly against the run of play, why did we not go to a 4-5-1 formation with Hall on for JE? The panic as soon as Forest scored their first goal is truly worrying. There are big issues to fix and let's hope Beppe can turn it around. COYH....

COYH.... M to the P

Cassetti is an absolute liability - it was looking that way towards the end of last season as his pace had started to go, but this year it's been downhill from him. Slow to close down again tonight, and whenever he comes on to shore things up, we ship goals for fun. Get rid!

Same too for Ekstrand in my opinion. Not strong enough to outmuscle attackers, and tries to make up for that lack of strength by diving in in dangerous positions. Also didn't track for two of the goals tonight. Fitz Hall seems a much more astute and physical player all round.

Speaking of which, where was Fitz Hall? Surely when Hendo was warming up it made sense to get our big man on too? And why not Merkel for Abdi? Confusing.

Whilst Fernando wasted possession in promising positions tonight, I felt our attacking intent dwindled when he left the field. We basically said to Forest - ok we are sitting back now, come at us - and we all know how that ends up.

Honestly cannot see where the next win is coming from. We are the team that can make any other team look half decent in this division. I will be surprised if Forest go up as they are very limited although they beat us comfortably tonight. Don't think we will see Abdi again this season, Murray and Battochio are too weak in the centre - a lot is riding on Merkel and Toszer lifting this side for the rest of the season. Would also be nice to see Deeney's place under threat to gee him up a bit.

Having watched tonight I have to agree with most posts. We desperately need some spine in midfield, a ball winner who can control and pass the ball to his own team! Dear old Lloyd can defend, he must, because he always returns the ball to the opposition?? Also too many lightweights, Forest continually gained possession. Only stand outs for me were Angella and Almunia. Hall and Nosworthy must play on sunday and we must show more determination all round. Bepe wears class suites lets hope he can TRANSLATE that class to the team!! Luv the Ornsss

Dont panic.

Lets give it a few more games.

He hasn't been in charge that long. I know at this rate he probably won't last long either.

Its all about the confidence within the squad. We played an amazing 60 mins on sat. A game like that can take a game or two to get over.

We did well to go 2-0 up today, but just like saturday we caved in as soon as we let in a goal. Thats when the panic sets in and its cos of lack of confidence and belief in the side.

I feel they desperately need a win and until they do, things won't change within the squad.

No interview as such after the game, probably because I can see the manager given a b*lluck*ng to the players as as people have said the honey moon period is over and he's the type of manager that realises that the fans are not happy and appreciates those loyal fans.

Next two games are crucial and we will know if he and the team will get through it.

Doyley,Fabbrini,cass

Quite right - playing a back three was a shambles last season, too. It was only the fact we scored 80 or so goals that disguised that to some extent.

Still, we will prob sign another couple of Serie A rejects tomoro, who won't be fit for two months or so.

It is clear there has to be changes in the line up on Sunday. Hall and Nosworthy at the back with Bellarin and Angella. Merkel and Tozser in midfield with Anya and Pudil. Ranegie and Deeney up front. Bring on Forestieri as an impact player. The message has got to be to all players, that if you are not prepared to put your heart and soul into this club then you know where the door is. No excuses, this is not acceptable!

I'm wounded after last night, watching that game hurt.

The basics were missing, the lack of a leader is obvious (Almunia is incapable of rallying the troops when needed, his is usually the first head to drop), and the teams confidence seems at an absolute all time low. I lost count at the number of times that 5-10 yard passes found an opposition player. There doesn't seem to be any grit, any hunger, passion is lacking from all but a few as well.

Fozza's decision making last night was woeful, I find faraoni far too lightweight. I was disappointed to see Anya run forward only to turn and pass the ball backwards instead of attempting to take on a defender.
I can't get my head around Fabbrini, he certainly isn't built for the championship IMO.

If you look at our squad, individually we have quality players, collectively they look S*y*t*.

Back to basics Beppe, the team look like strangers at the moment.

Despite all the positive vibe coming from the dressing room the new manager has not changed the results.
We keep surrendering leads..ignore Man City but the rest matter.
No Hall yesterday, No Merkel, Almunia flapping, Angella scoring the strikers bereft, Abdi breaking down and yet according to players our squad is stronger than ever (are u sure Lloyd??)

Perhaps start with Bond, Play Nosworthy and Hall and get back Tommie fast. Bellerin and Doyley in and Troy and the new guy up front. In midfield we have issues no Abdi available but Anya has pace and then the other two places you have to think hard...do we put in our new loanee and fernando and possibly Sean...Truth is without Hogg we are weaker, no Abdi, No Chalobah, No pace from Vydra we have a real problem, terrible form when we score we cannot manage a game and relegation begins to beckon. Over the last four months we appear to lose the midfield battle and whilst our attacking flair is good our defense manages to do little well and Fernando sums up the team well ... we flatter to deceive.

In the last two years we have gone from sensational at times to awful. We can rebuild under the Pozzos but hopefully Division 1 will not be experienced.

Nearly didn’t post tonight as I’m pretty upset having watched a thoroughly inept performance from the lads in every area of the pitch, not just defensively. Pudil, Angella and Fabbrini directly responsible for 3 of their their goals with Pudil and Angella’s marking quite appalling and what on earth was Murray doing tonight? Nightmare doesn’t even come close to describing his performance. It shows that Mr. Sannino still has to do much more work back there.
Sorry to say this but we all say what a terrific squad of players we have if only, if only, if only – blah, blah, blah. Truth of the matter is that most of our players are simply not good enough and frankly not competitive enough to compete with the more committed players from most other teams they come up against. It’s really that simple. I can’t imagine that we’ll get relegated this season, surely but in the back of my mind I’m now beginning to see that it is a possibility. A very uncomfortable feeling.

I've had enough! Anybody want my season ticket? No? - didn't think anyone would be interested.
I really do feel ashamed by that "performance" last night.
Still, in two year's time we'll be having derbies against that team up the M1....

Well done again, Nani - another triumph for our transfer supremo to go with replacing Vydra with Fabrini and bringing in gutless dimwits like Faraoni who cries as soon as someone goes near him.

Still, we will prob sign another couple of Serie A rejects tomoro, who won't be fit for two months or so.
The Thorne thing really doesn't make sense ... However good toszer may be ...

I can't do Murray or mcgugan centre mid ... Abdi has serious issues, fitness or otherwise and Battocchio who I love has to do more ...

This!!!

Nani is the issue...he is in charge of recruitment. He has single handedly misunderstood the type of players that need to be brought in. This was a major criticism of him in his WHU days.

Go back to basics....4-4-2 if you stop conceding goals, you cannot lose.

Ps I hate keepers that don't command 6 yard area and always opt to punch. That should be final resort...catch the bloody ball

Well you won't get that .. As keyboard warriors are never going to turn up to meet real people..otherwise they'd off accepted my kind offer of pouring drinks over their heads.
Anyway, having gone I can honestly say that this is poor. Clueless subs..sending on a crocked Abdi made no sense, Almunia pinching out to grateful Forest players, 11 man defending..giving no outlet from pressure, trying to sit on half time leads, taking off our two flair players...sorry Beppe, defend away all you like..this is not Serie D this is real life football where a game of chess is fire shaken for blood and thunder..learn quickly please or we are in a dog fight.
Nani, please go away.. You are next to pointless with your constant signing of unfit, unhappy Udinese cast offs...

Many thanks for a great report.

Sounds like we need to stiffen up. Perhaps Man City had an influence on how we view our game for the bread and butter Championship games where every team is going for the win.

Firstly, let's get one thing out of the way. Had the Pozzos NOT arrived on the scene there's a fair chance we would have been in administration and/or League 1 already, in debt and no chance of a new stand or some half decent players.

The only thing I can level at GS for last night is the bizarre substitions and line up.

First half Forest are causing all types of problems with dead balls yet the tallest defender is sitting on the bench?

The midfield is shockingly bereft of any creativity or movement yet Bellerin and Merkel remained glued to the bench?

He takes the ineffective Forestieri off but instead of putting a fit and ready midfielder on he puts on an unfit Abdi, only to then swap him for Casetti?

I can't speak for everyone but the moment Cassetti stepped on to the pitch I knew we'd lose. All forward impetus had been surrendered and we advertised our intentions to Forest who gleefully accepted our surrender.

Billy Davies got his substitions spot on, all 3 of them scored the four goals. We got ours woefully wrong yet GS has been in management for how long?

As for the players, aside from Deeney, Angella and maybe Murray the rest should be docked wages for stealing from the company accounts.

I can take losing, we lost by the same scoreline Saturday and I was fine with that but the lack of fight, passion or even ability to play a short pass to a fellow team mate is inexcusable.

My suggestions, not because I know better than the manager but everyone can see it including other managers and commentators:

Play four at the back as 352 is way too easily exploited;

Make an on field player the captain, not a shy, quiet goakeeper;

Allow Anya to use his pace; one move late on last night he had acres of space in front of him but inexplicably slowed to a crawl and walked TOWARDS the defender infield;

Get Tozser, Merkel and Bellerin involved ASAP - otherwise why the hell did we loan them (I know Tozser is awating international clearance atm);

Play at least two up front in whatever 'shape' you like but one single, not very pacey forward isolated against 3/4 hulking defenders does not work;

And last but not leastm Pozzos get your fingers out and sign that 2nd pacy genuine striker to assist Deeney/Ranegie (if we ever see the latter) rather than flyweight Fabbrini and Fessi.

RANT OVER. Love Watford and have seen worse but could take it when we have cloggers and journeymen mixed in with graduates - we now have some genuinely talented players so there are NO excuses; 3 wins in twenty replicated forwards will see us in League One next year.

makes me sick that so many of you, and the Pozzos, couldn't see this coming.

Get rid of non or Nani or whatever his name is. Get some British players in. And whoever was was daft enough to allow eustace to walk away, hang your head in shame.

HAPPY CLAPPERS GET A REALITY CHECK AND FINALLY ADMIT THAT US MALIGNED FEW HAVE BEEN RIGHT ALL ALONG.
Your argument was that it was all down to Zola's bungling incompetence. Next you'll be calling for Saninno to go back to the lunatic asylum. Where's it going to end?

No excuses, this is not acceptable!
Disappointed at the result last night but cannot comment on it as I didn't see it.
I will be there again Sunday and I also would like to see this line up, If we can't get a result with these players then it's time to panic.

I know the Pozzos are Italians and they have done wonders for our Club, However, do they have to give the top jobs to Italians - Zola, Sannino and particularly the useless Nani. Also, they do favour Italian players like the tired Cassetti and lightweight Faraoni and Fabbrini. Please give the other nations a chance!

Why throwing flares is wrong
Why someone having a different opinion doesn't make them a Luton fan
Why criticising fans for not going to Man City then not going to Forest yourself is hypocritical
Why turning on the team last night is not going to help our situation ...

Any from yourself?

Oh and I play football sunday morning so weather permitting I should arrive at 1pm
And any other posters want a face to face discussion it would be good to meet: SAHornet???

Heard it all on here recently on here:

Criticising Zola
Then Nani (possibly agree with this one)
Then Beppe after 5 minutes
Then the Pozzos are worse than Petchey

I said be careful what you wish for 10 games ago when zola was the scapegoat but a lot of you simply do not learn!!!
I think the clue is in SAHornet, he's from South Africa or are you that thick.
I thought under12's football was early kick off so no excuses be there at 12,.to go through your lovely list
Anyway it may be strange to you Benefit st but some of us have work to do.See you Sunday
Regarding SAHornet I was being ironic, knew it would be lost on you. I hate his know it all attitude with his access to 5 televised games a year.

Oh and let me summarise your above post:

McGugan has it all to be a top player but without effort and if he played last night he would once again get slaughtered on here.
He needs a massive kick up the backside or to get the message across, in the nuts!

Always wanting to look on the positive we scored 2 goals to take a lead, we could have scored more! The issues have been reiterated above but also a key point I have to make is the crispness of play that we saw in the first season of the Pozzo's era has gone, a few of our front players hold the ball too long and eventually lose it, we also seem to have a mentality of not passing with certain players keen to try and score, great but when you see players doing this when there is someone with a clear goal scoring oppotunity then p*ss poor team work, an assist is better than nothing, so Battocchio, Forestieri, Faroni, Fabbrini pass the f*cking ball. Also I think we need to look at goalkeeper it is easy to sit on the side and give comment but seriously why punch when you can and should catch and take pressure of the team your starting to look like a bystander with some of the goals being shipped. As a captain Almunia you are failing big time sorry!

Whilst everyone is entitled to an opinion the following really disappoints me.

We ask for character and mental strength from the management and players, but when it gets difficult supporters don't show any of the character they are asking for. Double standards in my book.

Are the players and management team disappointed and unhappy with the performance and result. YES of course.

Did they get it right at Forest? NO Did they do it on purpose NO

Are they lacking in confidence and belief YES

Is the players decision making on the pitch good at the moment NO

Do they lose on purpose NO

So one minute FF is a hero and the next he is useless. There is always an in between. Get real.

Do we need to throw flares on the pitch to show our support. NO unless you are still a little boy in your head. THEY ARE BANNED FROM FOOTBALL GROUNDS. GET OVER IT. Pyrotechnics are dangerous and can hurt someone.

We are in a relegation battle. We as supporters need to stand up and be counted too. Support and back the Pozzos who are trying to move our club forward. Show loyal support in the way we expect loyalty from them and do it sensibly.

The Pozzos are in it for the long haul. Lets back them and support them in what they are trying to do.

Judgement on the recruitment of players is easy after the event and not before.

Did you see the joy and determination from all the players when Angella scored the 2nd goal. Yes they made mistakes defending. Pudil for me was nowhere to be seen at the back post for the first 2 goals. Do I think he is crap. NO. Do players want to lose on purpose when they are 2 goals up? NO They have a very thin line of confidence and we need to help them regain that with our trust and belief.

YES I WAS AT FOREST.
NO Did they do it on purpose NO Are they lacking in confidence and belief YES Is the players decision making on the pitch good at the moment NO Do they lose on purpose NO So one minute FF is a hero and the next he is useless.
