In the absence of regular left-back Keith Pritchett, manager Graham Taylor experiemented by trying midfielder Wilf Rostron at number three for the first time.
Chelsea danger-man Clive Walker disappeared into his pocket and Rostron was a fixture at left-back for the next six years.
A generously awarded penalty, converted by Luther Blissett, gave the Hornets a 1-0 win at Vicarage Road.
