Beppe Sannino has paid tribute to Watford's "little big man" Cristian Battocchio - describing the distance he has covered in recent games as amazing.

Battocchio was on the verge of leaving the club on loan a few weeks ago but Sannino was keen to retain the player and injuries have seen the midfielder start the Hornets' last five matches.

Sannino had already praised the performances of Fernando Forestieri and Troy Deeney in his post-Brighton & Hove Albion press conference when he said: "We have named Troy and Forestieri but I have to name someone else – a little big man, Cristian Battocchio.

"He has played in the last few games and if you record the amount of kilometres that he has run, it is amazing.

"The balance we saw on the pitch today, we should give credit to Cristian."

Listen to Sannino's post-match press conference here.

Just a shame we're a football club and not Watford Harriers. ..no point running a marathon if you continually lose the ball. . Batts has potential but shouldn't be starting at the moment IMO..

I was one of them, but tiger is right, he can't keep giving ball up so easily, especially unforced errors.
Nothing overly critical in that is there?

I ain't thumbing either way cos I like you but I disagree. Batch needs games and he has undoubted quality even if he was rubbish at Forest maybe he was better yesterday. Also it's no coincidence that Fessi plays well when CB plays.

Mate, ditto and all that, but I'm a big Battochio fan as I am all our players but giving the ball away cheaply must be eradicated. It may be trying to force things, who knows? One thing for sure I think he'll be a star and will benefit from having Toszer and Merkel in there with him.

Haha thumbs up for forgiveness.

Anyway the kid who sits behind me kept slating Battochio and it really wore thin. I started watching him closely and think he's like an eager to please Jonathan Hogg. He does cover a lot of ground and clearly wants to cement his place. Just needs a chance to settle in and show some composure and skill that we've already seen from him on a consistent basis

I see it being totally counter productive to heckle a player at a game, but football is subjective and we all see things differently, and should feel free to speak our minds on such forums as these, surely that's the point of this isn't it? I suspect if the banter was gone and everyone loved one another and agreed with everything, you'd be left with but a dozen or so idealistic happy clapping Boy Scouts.
Lets hope we press on from Saturday, and cause an upset , where I'll be, supporting the boys, whoever is wearing the yellow shirt. I predict we will win.
Be interesting to see how many 'fans' thumbs down that...and as you would say Bush, it'll possibly leave people in a state of 'juxtaposition' ha ha

All I'd say is that I'm a huge Battochio fan but I wasn't overly impressed with his last two performances. I think he is capable of more especially with his passing.

However a couple of people, who's opinion I value, picked him out as the best midfielder of the trio Sunday (including a neutral) plus beppe is the expert here and if Battochio is crucial to his game plan then that's good enough for me.

I love Battocchio , I think he's a very skillful player but a the moment his form seems to have deserted him, like others on here that have noticed he gives the ball away too cheaply, he's turned into Jonathan Hogg, runs endlessly gets the ball and then gives it back to the opposition .
At least Battocchio has the ability to score wonder goals and his link up play with Fessi can be awesome.
I sure he's well aware of his carelessness and is trying to cut it out,so let's be patient , but with Diakite breathing down his neck I'm not sure he'll get the run of games he needs.

Minus 6 is that the best you tools can manage?
Come on let's ave it
I ain't thumbing either way cos I like you but I disagree.
The thing is on here, people are swatted for having an opinion, that's pants, and I pay to watch us home and away every game so ill damned well have mine, and laugh at the tools who form their opinion from their settees.
But I forgive them, for they are tools and they know not what they doeth.

Hmmm very juxtapositional. You're in positive votes as I write. Hope you're enjoying this moment Dan!
:-)
It feels strange and concerned my alter ego is winning the battle!

I like Battochio and hope he gets a run out but notice Sannino was talking about the space he covered (i.e. his running, tracking back, pressing etc.) and not necessarily the quality of his passing so why the argument?

On the passing/ball retention front he had a poor game by his standards but at least he was willing to make up for it when he lost the ball AND, for once, we had other players stepping in and helping out - first time in a while that's happened!

I think the manager's words are accurate in their praise for a certain facet and encouragement for a young player who looked like he was on his way out only a few days ago.

My tuppence worth anyway.

not a regular says...

Battocchio shirks tackles and headers and his passing is sometimes wayward. Yes, if he was a little more combative he would be awesome, but he’s not. A bit like when people gave Doyley stick for never putting in a tackle, his game involves always being on his feet ready to react, shepherding the opposition into less dangerous positions and where they can be doubled up on or giving our guys time to regroup and prepare.

He isn’t a regular starter now that Toszer and Merkel are around because no, he isn’t good enough. But when we need to play a pressing game he is invaluable due to his ability to win the ball without “winning the ball”. If that makes sense.

Now Hogg, there is an unsung player that we really do miss. He reminded me of a younger Eustace and now he has gone, it's obvious how influential he was.

Tozser could be a good replacement. ... time will tell.

Agree with most of those with negative scores. For all his running he does not achieve very much. I think he got three successful tackles in during the whole of the match (and to be fair one goal bound block) and his successful pass ratio was about 50%. He is a luxury player when things are going well, where he is able to move the ball forward, but if we need someone to get stuck in and break up opposition play he is just a waste of a player. A lot of our problems this season has been down to a light weight midfield so when it looked like he was going out on loan I was hoping that would help force a change.
