Swansea City were the fancied visitors to Vicarage Road, enjoying a 16-game unbeaten run and having won plaudits with an impressive cup draw with Fulham the previous weekend.
Watford upset the form book, however, overturning their own run of one win in seven to record a disciplined, inspired victory with a performance that visiting manager Roberto Martinez described as "perfect" and which was to win the club's Performance of the Season award.
A breakway goal from Tamas Priskin and a low drive from Tommy Smith did the damage; the game also provided recent signing Don Cowie with his full debut.
