The visit of local rivals Luton Town drew a new club record gate of 27,632 to Vicarage Road, almost twice the next highest attendance that season.
A 3-1 triumph for the visitors ended Watford's hopes of promotion from the third division (south); the Strawplaiters, as the Bedfordshire club were then known, would instead win the title themselves, abetted by 55 goals from Joe Payne who was amongst the scorers in this victory.
Len Fletcher got the consolation goal for the home side.
