A PASSPORT office worker from Wirral had her hair shaved off for Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of her dad.

The event was part of fundraising night orgaanised by Laura Maguire, 30, which took place at Ashville Football Club in Wallasey.

The evening of music, raffles and auctions has so far raised more than £6000.

Laura's father, Ronnie Whittenbury, 55, passed away on Valentine’s Day last year after a courageous battle, having been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma 20 years ago.

He was diagnosed as terminal in November 2012.

Ron, as he was affectionately known by family and friends, was described by Laura as much loved and respected character with a heart of gold. Originally from Scotland, he was an avid Stoke City supporter and moved to the Wirral in his early 20's where he met his wife Debbie.

He died seven weeks before Laura’s wedding. Laura said: “Dad was a true gentleman and an inspiration to everyone who knew him, he is my hero, he fought his battle with dignity.

“I chose to lose my hair, the men, women and children battling cancer every day do not have a choice. I wanted to do something to raise money and awareness. The event raised a staggering £6,000 with donations still coming in.”

Lisa Wild, fundraising manager for Macmillan said: "We are extremely grateful to Laura and all her family and friends who for raising such an amazing amount of money.

"I'd like to thank everyone who very generously donated money, time and raffle prizes to support this event, the money raised will make a real difference to people and their families affected by cancer and I commend Laura for such a courageous and generous gesture.

"One in three of us will receive a cancer diagnosis at some point during our lives and for most of us it will be the toughest challenge we'll ever face.

"Macmillan provides medical, emotional, practical and financial support to people and their families affected by cancer and events like this enable us to continue providing the vital support and services in the community.”
