Troy Deeney scores decisive penalty as Watford beat Middlesbrough

The gap to the Championship’s top six is down to six points after Watford again rolled up their sleeves to battle to a 1-0 win over Middlesbrough in a game which saw both sides play the last half-an-hour with ten men.

The Hornets improved as a relatively low key and uneventful first half had progressed, although the visitors thought they had taken the lead when Jonathan Woodgate headed a Grant Leadbitter free-kick past Jonathan Bond but it was ruled out for offside.

But there was nothing flat about the opening to the second period as the first 15 minutes contained a penalty and two red cards.

Troy Deeney made the breakthrough within five minutes of the restart from 12 yards after Ben Gibson had brought down Fernando Forestieri, only for the Hornets to be reduced to ten men soon after when Samba Diakite was shown a straight red card for a two-footed challenge.

But Gibson ensured the red card count was soon evened up as he picked up a needless second yellow card for trying to prevent Bond from clearing his lines.

Beppe Sannino made four changes from the side which beat Birmingham City on Tuesday night, two of which were injury enforced.

Captain and goalkeeper Manuel Almunia missed out with a calf injury, Joel Ekstrand was sidelined with the knee problem which forced him off midway through the first half in midweek while Cristian Battocchio and Alexander Merkel dropped to the bench. Their places were taken by Bond, Lloyd Doyley – who moved into seventh place in his own right on the Hornets’ all-time appearance list having pulled level with Kenny Jackett on Tuesday – Sean Murray and Diakite, who made his full debut.

Middlesbrough came into the game on the back of three successive goalless draws and Aitor Karanka made just the one change from the team which held Blacburn Rovers at home last time out as Albert Adomah replaced Mustapha Carayol, meaning Hornets old boys Danny Graham and Nathaniel Chalobah both started.

The Hornets lined up with Daniel Tozser still playing the holding midfielder’s role, despite Diakite’s presence in the starting line-up for the first time, against a Boro side playing a 4-2-3-1 formation.

The opening exchanges were relatively flat as both sides felt their way into the contest and it took until the eighth minute for the first goal attempt to arrive as Leadbitter screwed an ambitious attempt well wide from 25 yards.

Boro had most of the early possession and they had the next effort in the 14th minute when Emmanuel Ledesma fired wide of Bond’s near post.

Another one followed two minutes later when Ledesma spread the ball out to Adomah on the left and the winger came inside before hitting a low drive which Bond held by the foot of his near post.

The Hornets finally offered a threat on their opponents’ goal in the 19th minute when Daniel Pudil came inside off the left flank to receive a pass and slipped it sideways to Forestieri, whose 20-yard shot was deflected behind for a corner.

Murray missed the target with an improvised attempt with the outside of his right foot soon after before there were some enquiring looks from the visitors in the direction of Oliver Langford when George Friend was challenged in the area, but the referee was unmoved.

Graham had his first chance to shine in the 28th minute when he was found by an Adomah pass from the left but the former Watford striker went for a chip that cleared Bond’s crossbar.

The Hornets’ next opportunity came moments later when they built down the left and although Murray was fouled, the referee played advantage as Forestieri advanced before laying the ball across the face of the penalty area in the direction of Deeney, who dummied to Pudil, but he screwed his first-time left-footed strike wide of Shay Given’s near post.

Gibson received the game’s first yellow card in the 35th minute when he went through the back of Deeney. But the Boro defender was quickly joined in the notebook by Marco Cassetti for a clear body check on Leadbitter. From the resultant free-kick on the left, Boro thought they had taken the lead when Woodgate headed past Bond but the assistant’s flag was already raised for offside.

Deeney had the Hornets’ first on-target attempt in the 40th minute when his looping header from a Davide Faraoni cross was comfortably held by Given. Soon after, Tozser whipped in a free-kick from the left but a stretching Forestieri was unable to keep his far-post effort down under pressure from Chalobah.

Forestieri snatched another effort from distance wide in the last minute of normal time in the first half after Gabriele Angella had won the ball in midfield and showed good determination to ride a few challenges.

The Hornets made a change at the start of the second period but it was a significant moment for Tommie Hoban as he made his long-awaited return from injury in place of Doyley. Boro also made an adjustment as Carayol replaced Ledesma.

Within four minutes of the restart though, the hosts were given a great opportunity to take the lead as Forestieri beat Gibson on the left side of the penalty area and was taken down near the by-line. Langford had no doubts, immediately pointing to the spot and Deeney calmly sent Given the wrong way to move within one goal of reaching his half-century for the club and make it 1-0.

Having made the breakthrough, Diakite immediately made the task for his teammates that bit harder when he stupidly jumped into a challenge on Dean Whitehead two-footed and Langford reached for his back pocket to show the on-loan Queens Park Rangers midfielder a red card.

It almost got worse for Watford moments later as the ball was worked to Graham on the edge of the area and he hit a right-footed shot which was deflected narrowly wide of Bond’s near post with the keeper rooted.

The momentum was now with Boro but a moment of madness from Gibson ensured his side would also be reduced to ten men in the 57th minute.

Having already been booked in the first half, the Boro defender foolishly tried to prevent Bond from clearing his lines, the referee spotted it and a second yellow card was quickly followed by a red.

The cards continued to be flourished as Forestieri and Chalobah were both booked for squaring up to each other in the 59th minute and five minutes later Jozsef Varga also went into the book for a foul on Forestieri.

Sannino used that stoppage in play to make his second change, bringing on Ikechi Anya for Forestieri and six minutes later came the home side’s final alteration as Battocchio replaced Forestieri.

Bond needed two attempts to hold a Carayol shot from inside the D soon after before Varga made way for Curtis Main.

No sooner had that change been made though, the Hornets spurned a great chance to get the cushion of a second goal as the home side sprung the counter with Anya outpacing Whitehead to go through on goal, but as he closed in on Given he dragged his shot wide of the far post.

Bond comfortably held a Graham header from a Whitehead cross as Boro tried to look for a way back into the contest, Friend saw a drilled shot from the left angle of the area blocked before Graham put another attempt over from outside the 18-yard box.

Kei Kamara came on for Woodgate as Karanka continued to bolster his offensive options on the pitch and while Tozser had a shot saved by Given, it was getting frenetic in the Hornets defence at times as the visitors continued to seek a late reply.

Five minutes of stoppage time offered Boro further hope and they could have salvaged something when a cross from the left was helped back into the danger zone by Leadbitter but Graham couldn’t get enough power on his header to beat Bond as Watford moved up to 12th in the table off the back of a sixth clean sheet in their last seven games in all competitions at Vicarage Road.

Diaktie must go back to QPR. We should be wasting money on him. A dreadful first half but the second half did improve wfter both sidees were down to 10 men. Just as well their player had a mad moment to be sent off cos I doubt if we would have held on otherwise. We still put ourselves under too much pressure by holding back and inviting Boro to come forward. Deeney worked his socks off as did FF.

We played with 10 from the start; Diakite was an accident waiting to happen…….and it did! Self-evident why Harry didn't play him. We defended very deep again, yielding territory and possession continuously for the last 20 minutes - better teams would have punished us. But we will happily take 3 ugly points again.

Not going to write Diakite of completely, could be a lack of match fitness, but it was a poor, poor first performance.

Hoban is a God send, keep him fit.

Boring first 45 minutes and one of the most entertaining second 45 minutes I've seen at the Vic for a long time.

Keep Hall fit and it has to be him, Hoban and Angella. If he gets another injury though I would write him off as a backup and get a settled back three for a strong run in.

We can definitely do make the top 6, the team has the quality. And 6th place on a good run in is a **** site better than 3rd place on a poor run.

Most home debut players find an extra yard of pace, try too hard etc.. to impress their new manager, new team mates, new fans. But Diakite was an absolute disgrace. .He never got above jogging pace and strolled around effortlessly as if he believed he was too good to be here. ..I hope he is still continuing that walk down the tunnel and is nearly back at Shepherds Bush. .
Won ugly again. .masterclass in hold up play by Mr Deeney and a very composed 90 mins from a born again Marco Cassetti. .Personally I think we struggle still in midfield where my choice for the 3 central positions in an ideal world would be Toszer, Abdi and McGugan. .

Agreed Diakate real liability; why was he not subbed at half time. At least at the minimum he will miss the next three games. Hoban was fantastic and must keep his place alongside Angella and Cassetti. The latter has been a revelation at CB.
Midfield is a bit of a problem without Abdi. Toszer is great and Sean is doing well but who makes up the three? Battochio runs a lot but creates little so have to hope Merkel comes good.
Anyway real optimism for the rest of the season now.

I normally try to see the merits of anyone in a Watford shirt, but today I have witnessed the most abject performance from a supposed professional footballer for many a long year. I hope he returns to qpr immediately. What a lethargic buffoon. I can't even bring myself to name him!

However, thanks the to equally imbecilic actions of a Boro player the second half was everything the first wasn't. Stand out mentions to Tozser, the supremely calm Hoban, and the line leading by Deeney. Agreed Anya is a fantastic outlet when we are under the cosh. With a resurgent Marco our back three should be Hoban, cassetti and angella from now on. Well done lads, with one exception. Come on!

Yes. When we beat Leeds in the final, all the dials were pointing upwards. We got into the play-offs with a late dash. Leeds were faltering after being 2nd for some of the season and even top once or twice.

On Tues night, we'll be 5 points off the play-offs with 16/17? games to go. How could we not be strong pay-off contenders?

Boring first 45 minutes and one of the most entertaining second 45 minutes I've seen at the Vic for a long time.

Keep Hall fit and it has to be him, Hoban and Angella. If he gets another injury though I would write him off as a backup and get a settled back three for a strong run in.

We can definitely do make the top 6, the team has the quality. And 6th place on a good run in is a **** site better than 3rd place on a poor run.

Poor first half with a lack of quality and composure on the ball. All action second half with Deeney outstanding with his hold up play, Tozser organising and creating in midfield and Cassetti showing his class at the back......add to that Tommie looking good on his return. Although not the silky football of last year, what Beppe has instilled in his team is grit, determination and passion for the shirt. Despite conceding possession high up the pitch and defending deep we looked organised and resolute with Boro chances at a minimum. A few moans in the first half when things didn't go our way but crowd were great after half time with best atmosphere at the Vic for some time.
Important to manage expectations in what has been a bit of a rollercoaster season when talking about play off chances. Realistically from where we sit in the table there is only place up for grabs as we are 13 points away from Forest in 5th place and we will be competing with perhaps 8 clubs for 6th place....not impossible but a real challenge. We need to keep winning and build the momentum and other results will take care of themselves.
There was a real feeling of togetherness about the team in the second half and two clean sheets in a week is testament to our new found resilience.

Great team performance, and individual brilliance from Cassetti, Hoban, Tozser (again), Deeney, Forestieri and apart from the first 30 minutes from Murray, but did we also witness the worst ever individual display in a Watford shirt? To be fair, he was no worse than Battocchio on Tuesday night. Until the stupid challenge. Couple of times he rolled players nicely started a move well but that was far too infrequent and saw him give the ball away stupidly a good few times. I would be happy enough if he doesn't play again - Merkel, Murray and Battocchio have to start ahead of him.

However, the bell at the back of the Rookery screaming "what a player" sarcastically from his first touch really needs to take a look at his life

Come on don't be shy.. After all it was only his first full debut after a lengthy period on the sidelines.
Sure his challenge was stupid and his performance looked rusty, have seen similar things over the course of this season on acts of stupidity from other Watford players over the course of this season.
I mean how many like to give Cassetti stick here, your very quick at it but when he has a fine game, like today, you're very quiet.
Give Diakite a chance will you. He's played premier league and I expect can contribute further to our season, if we just give him a chance to repay us from todays mistakes.
Honestly some people need to understand football before commenting on it.

I'll jump straight on the bandwagon. He WAS poor in the first half - seemed happy to take possession in tight areas and then hang on to the ball until he was dispossessed, even from a short free kick where he demanded the ball be played to him(just before half time). He then made a shocking tackle that everyone in the ground knew would result in a red card, leaving us with 10 men and 35 minutes to play. If we compare his performance to that of another player returning from a long spell out in Tommie Hoban, the difference is there for all to see, whether we know about football(like yourself) or not. He may well have a part to play yet but not with the sort of attitude and display we saw from him today.

Couldn't make the game today so can't comment. However it's funny how things change so quickly. I swear it was just a week or so ago we were hearing it was 2 wins in the last 14 league games or something, now it's only 2 defeats in the last 10 league games, 3 league wins at home on the trot, only 1 goal conceded at home in the last 7 home games and since Beppe took over etc etc!
Things are certainly looking up and we seem to be improving. Just goes to show that keeping clean sheets is the key, look at hull and Cardiff last year, and QPR this year. Kings of the 1-0 wins!! Last year was great but defensive frailties really cost us in the end. Nowadays It may not be as pretty but it's certainly a nice feeling to get back to back victories within 4 days.
Play offs are a possibility, and as someone said above, it's that 6th place spot which is wide open. Plenty of time left but I don't want to get hopes up too much; high expectations breed frustration as we all must've learnt this season! Of course the play offs will be nice but ill settle for a strong finish to the season, and building a team for a real promotion push next season. We definitely have the ability amongst the players. COYH Y Yeovil on Tuesday, I'll take a 0-1 !

Yeovil will NOT be an easy place to go to as they'll be scrapping but I'm sure that the Bepster will get them organised for it.

For me this was an important result today, facing a very decent side who had just signed an ex-hornet Hero in Danny Graham 24 hours earlier. Usually those type of players always score against us, today he didn't, secondly we have a history of conceding in the last few minutes - again, we didn't. Bond looks like he has lost some confidence, understandable to a point after the Man City error, but the lad has ability and he must get over past mistakes - and quickly. Goalkeepers must have belief. I won't dwell on Diakite, he alone knows he played a very poor game and his challenge was awful. Obviously he deserves a second chance, everybody does, but he may have to wait a while after his ban clears with the way the team are playing. Hoban and Deeney were huge today, one returning from a lengthy spell out and loving every minute of it today, he is one huge asset to us, and Deeney was the Troy of old, a classic no nonsense English centre forward. Yeovil away will be tricky , but with the way our defence is playing, the superb addition of Toszer, I can see us being very hard to beat in the coming months. As much as I remember GFZ with a lot of affection, those last dark months of his time here seem a long time ago. Sannino really has done an excellent job!

Great 2nd half. Truly woeful 1st half. Exceptional atmosphere in the Rookery and people actually singing on the way out of the ground. Can't remember when that last happened. But let's not get carried away: Boro were poor; We didn't score from open play; We didn't really come alive until Anya came on and exploited the wide open space left from them pushing for an equaliser. And it seems a shame to me that a player of Angella's quality is instructed to just hoof the ball away aimlessly at any sniff of danger - that's not the way to build good counter attacks.

Ok we can now grind out a win - and Tuesday was a particularly unattractive win - but gone are the days of us showing the league how football can be played in the 2nd tier. Last year we were a Premiership looking side that just needed to somehow get to the Premiership. This year we definitely look like a Championship side. Hats off to Beppe he knows what he's doing. And who knows? He may get us out of this league 1st time of asking. Stranger things have happened. I hope he does I really do. But I miss quite a lot about Zola's expansive, passing, free scoring approach. I know it was far from perfect and ultimately failed the test. But it was great at times. I still want to believe we can get out of this league playing as a team that would suit the Premiership.

Happy to join the Hoban appreciation society but also want to mention the unsung Doyley - one of the better players from 1st half. And while Diakite was a fool for that challenge, there is definitely a big rolling bandwagon saying that was the worst debut of a Watford player forever blah blah. I'm keeping off that bandwagon. Everyone deserves a 2nd chance and if he's lucky enough to get it and wears yellow again then I'll support him.

I think I've said enough for some thumbs down. Get on with it.
Then why have a arsenal loan forward if he doesn't use him?

Good question. Maybe, just maybe, he doesn't rate him much. After all, not his choice to sign him, and I don't see arsenal fans exactly glowing in their praises...

I wasn't at the game so cannot comment on Diakite but it sounds like he had a stinker. No point writing him off yet though, everyone's allowed a second chance.

Yeovil will NOT be an easy place to go to as they'll be scrapping but I'm sure that the Bepster will get them organised for it.

Because we had already gone to 3-5-1 when Fessi was on the pitch. Bringing Park on would have left us light in midfield. Effectively he was replacing an injured striker playing in midfield for a midfielder

I agree about Pudill and Faraoni, created virtually nothing going forward. Anya created more than both of them together in his 30 minutes and if we had another creative wing back to go play on opposite side we would have a good balanced team

True. However at least bringing on park would have been introducing a 'midfielder' with more of an attacking threat (ala fessi) than batti who was always going to sit back. Boro at that point had chalobah at centre back. At 2-0 there is now way back.

I agree about Pudill and Faraoni, created virtually nothing going forward. Anya created more than both of them together in his 30 minutes and if we had another creative wing back to go play on opposite side we would have a good balanced team
We do have one though......Hector Bellerin.
I agree with those who state Pudil is not great going forward and that can hold us back when we are on top. However defensively I thought he was very good yesterday and has in recent games made some important interceptions, notably the last ditch block at Bournemouth.

If he can work on his crossing, he can be a real asset, as he is totally committed to Watford. If we expect him to be John Barnes or Jordi Alba, we are going to be disappointed, but if Sannino's plan is to gring out 1-0's and 2-0's, then he will be a useful asset.

As for Tommie Hoban, he carried on where he left off- what a composed performance in the second half. Great to have him back.

Probably get thumbs downs as I'm a foreign fan but I agree with your GZ sentiments, Bush and can't help wondering how good and dangerous we would have been had Zola been given a Beppe-like defensive coach to work alongside him ????? Agreed, Fessi got problem with hamstring, but we had Park-Chu Young sitting on the bench. Why not go like to like and try and kill the game rather than sitting deep, inviting your opposition to have more possession and potentially goal scoring opportunities?

Didn't go today so can't comment on the match . However I can see that we are at last becoming hard to beat and I welcome that . I still think we are going to pulverize someone soon .This team has quality and flair and also the work ethic Soon it will all start to gel and then watch us go .Is it too late for this season ? Who knows football always dishes up surprises .We all remember being 12 points clear at Christmas only to watch it all disappear.
I like what I see in this team in this manager and in our owners. We are at the moment winning ugly but we will gel soon and win in style. There is no team in the Championship we need to fear.
Those of us that were underwhelmed at Beppes' appointment must now recognize a shrewd tactician who has a plan B and can grind out results .
The pieces of the puzzle are there . I trust the management will piece it all together. If not this season then certainly next. COYH

Yo Cornetto!

For once, I find it difficult not to agree with your posting!

And no doubt you tried!

I think though Cornetto, if you had actually seen Diakite play today you may not have been so generous with your 2nd chances...
True I wasn't there and the consensus is that Diakite was tripe. He might come good though (but I doubt it).

Anyway Demerit, what you having to lunch today?

Thank you for taking an interest. A ham and cheese sandwich actually...
Very nice. I had roast chicken and potato salad. Very nice it was too.

Agreed, Fessi got problem with hamstring, but we had Park-Chu Young sitting on the bench. Why not go like to like and try and kill the game rather than sitting deep, inviting your opposition to have more possession and potentially goal scoring opportunities?
Because that's not the Italian way.
