Two first-half goals ensure Watford beaten 2-0 by Bolton Wanderers in the Championship

Watford Observer: Picture: Action Images Picture: Action Images

Watford endured an afternoon to forget at the Reebok Stadium as two first-half goals were enough to give Bolton Wanderers a comfortable 2-0 win in the Championship.

The Hornets were defensively lacklustre in the first period and paid the full price as Lukas Jutkiewicz opened the scoring with a close-range finish before the lively Joe Mason made it two on the stroke of half-time.

Watford switched to 4-3-3 early in the second period but in truth it was the home side who came closest to adding another goal and Beppe Sannino’s side had Manuel Almunia to thank for keeping the scoreline respectable.

The result comes as a blow to the Hornets’ lingering hopes of a late play-off push although the gap remains eight points after sixth-placed Reading lost against Blackburn Rovers.

Bolton went into the match without a victory in eight matches but with cause for optimism having only lost one of their last seven games against Watford.

Sannino made three changes to the side that drew at Yeovil. Chu-Young Park was handed his first start for the club since joining on loan from Arsenal while Sean Murray came into the midfield in place of Cristian Battocchio and Davide Faraoni replaced Daniel Pudil at wing-back.

Bolton made just one change as Mason was selected ahead of former Hornet Chris Eagles and it was the Cardiff City loanee who had the first chance of the contest.

Marco Cassetti was momentarily off the pitch receiving attention to his knee strapping and the hosts took full advantage, slipping Mason through for a one on one but his low shot was denied by the foot of Almunia.

Watford created a chance of their own moments later as Ikechi Anya sped past Alex Baptiste and crossed for Troy Deeney who should have scored from six yards out but found the grateful hands of Adam Bogdan with his header.

Mason was causing the Hornets all sorts of problems with his pace and direct running and in the 16th minute he went even closer to finding the breakthrough.

The 22-year-old latched on to a through ball, shrugged off the challenge of Gabriele Angella and went round Almunia but as he looked set to roll the ball into an open net, Watford’s Faraoni appeared out of nowhere to slide the ball out for a corner.

Mason had another go from the resulting corner but his flicked header was straight at the keeper.

Watford emerged from an edgy five minutes unscathed and Alexander Merkel teed up Deeney on the edge of the box but the striker skewed his half-volley wide.

Faraoni was arguably the Hornets’ brightest attacking outlet in the early stages and the Italian tested Bogdan with a fizzing effort in the 24th minute before moments later winning a free-kick on the edge of the box. Daniel Tozser shot into the wall and then fired the rebound narrowly wide.

The game began to settle down after a ten-minute spell full of chances but Bolton continued to look dangerous, particularly from set-pieces where Watford were regularly being beaten to the ball.

In the 34th minute, it proved costly as Jay Spearing crossed a free-kick low from the right and the ball somehow found its way to the back post where Jutkiewicz side-footed home.

Bolton then enjoyed the majority of possession before half-time and carved out another opening, again from a set-piece, as this time David Wheater headed over from a free-kick.

Watford looked ready for the interval but Bolton had other ideas and grabbed a crucial second goal just before the break as Mason again got in behind and this time made no mistake, slotting the ball past Almunia for a 2-0 lead.

Within minutes of the restart, Cassetti came off for Daniel Pudil as Watford switched to 4-3-3 with Pudil at left back and Ikechi Anya playing in a front three with Deeney and Park.

Just before the hour mark, Bolton’s Medo went close with a free-kick but but his bending shot from 25 yards flew narrowly over the bar.

The home side looked the more likely to score and in the 59th minute, Mason played a reverse pass into Neil Danns who crossed to the back post where Mark Davies mishit his finish. The ball found its way back to Danns who acrobatically volleyed into the hands of Almunia.

Sannino threw Battocchio on for Merkel while Mathias Ranegie replaced Park who had a quiet debut albeit with very little service.

Ranegie had a chance to score almost immediately as Deeney tussled with Wheater and ball spilled out to the substitute who dragged his shot wide.

Overall though the second half changes had little effect as Bolton continued to enjoy more possession and the better openings.

In a rare foray forward, Tozser crossed from the left and the ball dropped out to Murray on the edge of the box but his rasping shot was straight at the keeper.

In the 75th minute, Battocchio tested Bogdan with a dipping shot from range but a minute later, the best chance of the half fell to Bolton.

Mason latched on to another through ball in behind Angella and as the striker bore down on goal Almunia did brilliantly to close down the space and smother the shot.

As the Hornets committed men forward looking for a lifeline the game opened up for Bolton who should have added a third when Jutkiewicz accelerated past Joel Ekstrand and found Chu-Yong Lee at the back post but the substitute opted to square the ball back and the chance was lost.

There were six minutes of added time but Watford were unable to stage any sort of late rally and with the final whistle blown, their winless run away from home was extended to 12 matches.

Just walked out the ground. I'm a believer and try to be as optimistic as i can, but honestly anyone who mentions Watford in connection with the play offs again this season needs to be laughed at. All the strengths we had under Zola seem to have been stifled - all creativity, imagination and attacking flair squashed for stale, dull football which isn't even grinding out results at the moment. Hugely disappointing because it seems the fight has gone from some hugely talented players. Just need the summer now and go again next year.

Deeney Is great when he is hustling and bustling and scoring from scraps.

However, he is in my opinion very average. How many times does he fail to score from a good heading opportunity? Or even test the keeper...

How confident are you when he has a one on one ? - so often he hits straight at the keeper. Plus he is far too slow.

Well we have failed to score against two of the weaker teams in the league.

The defence sounded all at sea on the radio , however there had to be a game where we was going to concede.

Not sure what the answer is / Beppe needs more time and another transfer window . Most disappointing of all is the fact that most of the other results went our way.

Oh well - roll on Blackpool

Its a fine line. If we had won today we would be 5 points from play offs and people on here would have been discussing possible promotion to the promised land.

The damage was done though Zola's lack of organisation and that terrible run of home games November / December.

I seem to remember his days at westham finished under similar circumstances.

Bolton beat Watford's high defensive line so easily in the first half. Almunia made a couple of great saves and Faroani made one of the best last ditch tackles I have ever seen. We could have conceded 4 in first half alone. Ekstrand gave the ball away in his defensive third at least 4 times. It was poor today. We are a few quality players short.

Nothing to do with Zola!
Blame recruitment policy - Euro journeymen/free transfers/unfit players....
Given the quality we have and the lack of an on-field leader I think we are overachieving.
Next season will be telling - my bet is a relegation struggle and fewer season ticket holders - why waste money watching boring football?

Went to the game we were awful.. Two down at half time you would hope that the team would come out second half all guns blazing trying to claw their way back into the game, no, served up the same negative rubbish as the first half. Beppe has staved off the relegation threat but cannot be the man that leads the club to the premier league. His tatics are negative and we pose no threat going forward. We may well pinch one or two one nils under this leadership but when the chips are down and we find ourselves chasing a game forget it this guy does not see football as a fame to win he thinks if you don't lose it's ok.
Might as well stop building the stand we will not fill the ground serving up this rubbish
Sorry nani and co it ain't working and it's back to the drawing board. Forget playoffs this team and it's style is mid table at best.
Won't be spending any more of my hard earned watching this rubbish much rather see us lose three two and show some fight. This was pathetic trust me.

Have to agree that Sannino is not the answer - The dreadful attacking performances have been excused because he was suposed to be working on the defence - well excuse me but the defence is cack. There is too much chopping and changing and no cohesion througout the team . Doyley was our best defender a week ago and is left out - why? The Pozzos did not come here to be mid table and they will only be able to sell on players if they do well in a successful team. Watching Watford recently brings back memories of Hoofroyd - I fear that last season was a high point that we will not see again for a while - still we have the memories.

Didn't go to the game but listened to the commentary. The Manager and Team need to apologise to the travelling fans for that display (just seen Sanninho has done just that). Where was our defensive resilience? By the sound of it we should have been 0-4 down at half time. I don't even want to think about our goal scoring options.

We had a golden opportunity before the Yeovil game to be just 3 points off the play-offs if we had won these two matches against mediocre opposition. The other results really went our way today. Instead we have meekly surrendered that chance and mid table is all we can expect.

Following the Hornets has always been a challenge to our loyalty and things have been much, much, much worse in the past. I guess it is the hangover from last season that makes the current situation seem so depressing.

Never mind...lets get behind the Golden Boys next Saturday!

Off the pitch we seem to be in a good place but that will only continue if the team are successful, the Pozzos said they were in for the long haul, but if their continental system and set up does not work in the championship they will start to reconsider their options I'm sure, lot all fans they are but business men they are foremost. Love WFC always will do. :-(

I can't help feeling that all these players are just using Watford to get themselves a move to a club where they play first team football. hardly any of them are right for the physicality of the Championship. Our manager is a typical Italian manager, there will not be attractive football but attritional, dour games which we try to win by a single goal. It is the typical Italian way, which won't work in English football.
I can't help feeling that all these players are just using Watford to get themselves a move to a club where they play first team football. hardly any of them are right for the physicality of the Championship. Bit confused really. This squad did perform well last season and they early part of this but now can't seem to compete with the likes of what are poor championship sides like Yeoville and Bolton etc. What's changed? - Vydra, Challobah, Abdi etc etc. Why has it been so impossible to replace them with like minded/skilled players, given our owners pool of players and the rest of the normal UK pool of players? Answer.....NANI ????? Interested to hear others thoughts

Spot on, mate. I never leave a ground before the finish, and I didn't this time, but very tempted to , and only the railway station being so close stopped me. Sunday league football is more exciting than this. The score flattered us.

That must have been bad, even Almunia is embarrassed by the display of some of our players, suggesting they have no desire or effort.
Seems Beppe is only short term and we will have to start afresh again next season.
But we are oddly enough still in with a shout this year.

Why did we make such a knee jerk appointment in the first place! Why couldn't of we attracted a Billy Davies/Steve Mclaren sort of breed. These guys know the league inside out. We managed to get Zola, and then we bring in a guy who hasn't a clue about our game. So many good managers who were out of a job at Christmas. Holloway and Warnock both taken teams out of this league and we get some unknown Italian who is making us watch utter tosh.

You're giving him 2 games next season?

Sorry to burst your bubble but sannino will be going no where and will be in charge next season , poor display yes ( I was there ) but hardly blame him for what the players dished out. We ere unbeaten in 5 previous to this so lets just finish the season in good form and push again next year

Fabbrini will turn out to be in the top 5 players ever to wear a Watford shirt ...

I hope we still own him when he peaks ...
Are you mad ? Fabbrini top 5 Watford players of all time !
I will have a pint of what ever youre on !
Another well thought out, reasoned response Jeffery. ..

Is it really all Sannino's fault though? Because it seems like there is a genuine lack of effort from some of the players - where is the desire and fight?

Ironically he came in to shore up the defence but at the moment (Yeovil aside) we are shipping goals in 2's and 4's away from home with the added depressant of not scoring many at home (1 goal from open play in 4 games).

Awful season no matter how it's sliced. On the pitch we are in the same exact position we were two seasons ago under Dyche but the only difference is then it was considered over achievement but this time it's massive under achievement!

Roll on the summer. Get rid of the stupid warehousing of poor players, get rid of that **** Nani, get a proper medical team in not these bogus doctors who seem unable to keep players fit or fix them and most importantly stop treating the ENGLISH second tier like it's Serie B - the difference in style, requirement and quality is immense and you'd really expect footballing people to have worked that out in a couple of months let alone a couple of years.

Yes, unbeaten in 5 very poor games. The owners know that if you keep doing the same you can only expect to get the same result. Change has to happen if the owners' and the supporters' ambitions coincide'.
