The Hornets pulled off a surprise, recording their first league victory of the year against second division leaders and eventual champions Leeds United at Vicarage Road.
Watford goalkeeper Tony Coton denied Lee Chapman with a fine early save, and Gary Williams also excelled having joined the Hornets from Leeds six weeks earlier.
Rod Thomas scored the only goal of the game, lobbing Mervyn Day from 35 yards after latching onto a Gary Porter through ball that Leeds manager Howard Wilkinson later described as a fluke.
