A COMMUNITY Orchard was planted at Wimbleball Lake last week with volunteers including local residents, a police community support officer and members of the Dulverton & District Young People’s Project.

Together they planted 35 apple trees, all local varieties supplied by Adam’s Apples in Honiton.

Alex Forster, Exmoor manager for the South-West Lakes Trust, said: “We hope the Community Orchard will provide educational opportunities for local people in orchard management, and can be used for events such as wassailing, apple pressing and storytelling.”

The project was funded by a grant from The Big Tree Plant and The Lennox & Wyfold Foundation.

Jude Atkins, project coordinator from the DDYPP, said: “It was great to have an opportunity to engage young people in local conservation work – they had a really positive experience and are very keen to help out again.”
