Doncaster Rovers boss Paul Dickov admits his team "got away with it" with regards to a controversial penalty not given in the first half against Watford but believes Rovers were well worth their 2-1 victory.

Referee Christopher Sarginson sent Hornets striker Mathias Ranegie off in the 19th minute and could have made it ten players each shortly before half-time.

Troy Deeney closed down Sam Johnstone's clearance and was about to get up and shoot into an open net when the Rovers keeper appeared to haul the Watford forward to the ground.

"From where I was and from what I've seen I thought we had a couple of players back there - you might have seen it again - but I did think we got away with it [with regards to it being a penalty]," Dickov said.

"My initials thoughts were it was a penalty - I haven't seen it again, I don't know if you guys have.

"I keep getting told from referees and people within the game that things even themselves out, I've not always believed them but I might believe them after tonight given the penalty Watford got at their place which was three yards outside the box."

Ikechi Anya cancelled out Chris Brown's opener and the Hornets looked like they might go on and win the game at that point.

Dickov praised Watford's resilience but felt his team had chances in the second half to record a more emphatic victory.

"Watford to their credit worked their socks off and made it difficult for us," Dickov continued.

"But after they've equalised we got back to doing the right things - moving the ball, getting the ball wide, getting crosses in the box and getting shots on goal.

"I'm delighted with the three points but I think we're being honest about it, we should have scored three, four, maybe five tonight.

He added: "I thought we switched off. We stopped doing the things that got us in front in the first place and made us look threatening.

"There's a tendency - and I've been there as a player - that when you play against ten men you just take your foot off the gas a little bit and you psychologically switch off.

"I thought we did that and it took Watford to equalise to give us a kick up the backside and get us going again."

why are reporters always hiding behind words like 'appeared to' and 'arguably' . There is no 'appeared to' about it. Their keeper rugby tackled our striker as he was about to tap the ball into an empty net. He didn't 'appear to', he did. That is a penalty and a red card, it's not 'arguably one', it is.

Doncaster probably only deserved it because they were playing against 10 men. If the penalty had been given and they had gone down to 10 men as they should have done who knows what they would have deserved at the end of the 93 minutes. I would say that the momentum would have firmly swung towards the Hornets and we'd have probably gone on to win the game, and deserved to!

Gutted, p****d off you name it and I wasn't even at the game.

I don't really give a monkey's what Paul Dickov thinks about the penalty we should have been given, we still lost and now have a mountain to climb if we're going to make the top six. Let's be honest if we can't put away teams like Doncaster, Yeovil and Bolton do we really deserve to be any higher up the league? Well done to all the fans who made the long trip up there and for the 10 guys for snatching an equaliser and for holding out for so long. But who oh why do we put oursleves in this position time after time. We must hold the record for late goals conceded across all divisions.

Talking of records we've now had three of the new guys sent off in their first or second games for the club. Lessons need to be learned and we need to quickly regroup for Barnsley on Saturday. COYH

This was neither Ranegie's first nor second game for the club

Paul - You were only 'well worth your win' thanks to the ineptitude of the referee.

I personally think our season is over after that result. Very disppointing. The pozzos need a thorough review of their future strategy. I'm sure they are reflecting heavily over the success of the manager they sacked when they took over.....

All very easy in hindsight mate. Didn't see you on here saying 'Bring back Sean Dyche' last season though....

Just had a look at the pen awarded at Vic Rd that Dickov says "even themselves out". 3 yards outside the box and all that.

Not that there is any point in saying what the rules are - the ref must punish the more serious offence. The foul was OUTSIDE the box on Murray. BUT as it CONTINUED into the box - lifting Murray into the air -

THAT IS A PENALTY

just we have spineless sh1ts as refs they are not usually given.

The world and his wife did not want Sean as boss - until they saw him make a silk purse out of a sows ear.

He is a motivator and good on tactics. He only had money to buy the rotten fruit that everyone else left on the shelf but knew how to slot the kids into games to plug holes.

He was continuity in the backroom and no one else would have had the trust of the young pros like Sean Murray and Marvin Sordell.

Sean made a remark that reading between the lines said McPie screwed Watford by taking away the backroom staff. He stayed with s0d all support and did a better job than his predecessor.

He's gone and he won't come back but at least we can be honest - we did not have a pot to urinate in but neither were in a relegation dogfight!
