An Allan Smart strike two minutes from time after a neat exchange with substitute Tommy Smith gave the Hornets their first win of the calendar year.
Victims of the 1-0 defeat, in only Watford's fifth victory of the season, were Sheffield Wednesday who like the Hornets were destined for relegation from the top flight.
The clean sheet was the first achieved by Watford since victory over Chelsea at Vicarage Road exactly six months earlier.
