Watford travelled to Middlesbrough on a run of 13 games without a win, sitting six points adrift at the foot of the table.
Defeat looked likely until a fine Gary Porter free-kick equalised Baird's strike on 81 minutes.
Eight minutes later winger David Byrne received David James' long throw and cut inside to strike a shot from 25 yards beyond Andy Dibble. Remarkably, this was his last kick of the ball for the club.
The win precipitated a run that saw the Hornets escape relegation with a game to spare.
