Watford will be one of 92 clubs to enter a Ryder Cup style charity golf tournament to be crowned English and Welsh football's best team on the course, with all proceeds going to charity.

The National Football Club Golf Championship will include 20 to 25-man teams from each club, consisting of fans and captained by a former club player. Each team will compete against three others in regional qualifiers, with the winners advancing to the semi-finals.

The Hornets will face off against Wycombe Wanderers, Stevenage and Leyton Orient at Manor of Groves GC in Sawbridgeworth on April 8.

The final will be held at The Belfry on July 18, with all money raised being equally shared between the 92 clubs' respective foundation charities.

Taking the form of a Stableford competition with a shotgun start across 18 holes, the club with the highest points total will be deemed the winner of each stage. The event kicks off on March 25, with Plymouth Argyle, Yeovil Town, Exeter City and Torquay United fighting for regional supremacy.

Director of Fairway Golf Management, Neil Bettridge, said that: "I was thinking ahead to the Ryder Cup and wondering, ‘what other sporting occasions bring that kind of rivalry?’ "The answer of course is football which is where the concept was born, and what better purpose than to hold this event to raise money for each club’s charitable foundations, which do some much good work for local communities.

"I know how much corporate golf days can raise and when you think how much a whole tournament could raise, we hope to put a significant amount of money to charity."

Each leg of the tournament will feature a three-course presentation dinner with prizes for the highest three individual scorers, plus winners of the nearest to the pin and longest drive competitions. A question-and-answer session with the former players will round off the day.

Supporters wishing to get involved by representing their club can head to www.FCGolf.eu to enter. The event will be delivered by Fairway Golf Event Management.
