Watford Under-18s showed resilience to come away with a 2-1 win over Gillingham on Saturday despite difficult conditions, according to Hornets youth coach Dave Hughes.

Second half goals at London Colney from Kunle Otudeko and Il Myeong Choi arrived either side of a strike from opposition captain Josh Staunton as the Hornets claimed victory.

“We talk with the lads a lot about resilience." Hughes told the official club website. "The resilience of the players was evident when we went one-nil up, they equalised but we kept going."

He added: “The lesson today was that when faced with a difficult surface it becomes harder to pass as much as you would like.

"Through balls don’t come off, first touches can be misjudged and the lads have had to deal with that today.”
