The unheralded Adrian Boothroyd was appointed as Watford manager in succession to Ray Lewington.
At 34, the former Leeds United coach became the youngest manager in either the Premiership or Football League, bringing in former Tottenham manager Keith Burkinshaw as his assistant and successfully attracting former colleagues from Elland Road and Norwich City to the club.
He was to become only the second man to oversee promotion to the top flight at Vicarage Road, doing so in his first full season as manager.
