It was a calmly converted penalty that brought up Troy Deeney’s 50th Watford league goal. Two more and the striker will become the first Hornets player since Cliff Holton to net 20 times in consecutive seasons.

Deeney’s half century, which includes that infamous play-off semi-final strike against Leicester City, has been scored in 115 Championship starts.

It’s an impressive ratio, especially considering he ended his first season at Vicarage Road with just two league goals.

The 25-year-old has found the net 17 times in the league this season and, with nine matches still to play, is on course to become the first player since Holton in 1961 to strike 20 times in the league in back-to-back campaigns.

In all competitions, Deeney has scored 53 goals for Watford since joining the club in 2010 from Walsall.
