Watford’s draw at home to Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday realistically put an end to our slim play-off hopes.

It is still mathematically possible to achieve but with nine games to go we’re ten points adrift of sixth placed Reading.

The Hornets would have to win almost all of those games and rely on some of our rivals to drop several points to break into the top six.

However, the season is far from over and each game now could be viewed by the Watford management as a chance to weigh up the players who they wish to be involved next season.

One man who has again proved his worth to the team is Troy Deeney. The striker is now only two goals away from achieving his tally from last season and, if his current goal scoring form is anything to go by, he looks odds on to go beyond the 20 mark.

Another individual who has really come on is Ikechi Anya. The pacey winger has been key to the side and has recently shown his versatility in playing up front.

While it is clear he is stronger in his natural position at wing-back, he has done very well to fill in during Watford’s striker shortage and I would be happy for him to help out again in the future if such a problem was to repeat itself.

Unfortunately, some players have not been able to nail down a first team position this year for one reason or another. That may mean Reece Brown, Javier Acuna, Nyron Nosworthy and Iriney may be moving on come the season. In addition to these players Watford’s group of loanees will also be returning to their parent clubs, including the influential Daniel Tozser.

Tozser has had a huge impact since joining on loan in the January transfer window from Genoa.

He has been part of the reason that the Hornets are currently on an unbeaten run of seven at home.

The central midfielder has been very composed and exuded confidence since his arrival, drawing attention from the Premier League as well as abroad. I am sure Watford will try and sign him up permanently in the summer.

If a deal could be done it would be a great coup and, combined with the addition of a pacey yet strong striker (in my opinion desperately needed), and the return of Almen Abdi (last season’s stand out performer) Watford could be a genuine competitor for the play-offs next season.
