Lloyd Hatton claims that politicians are favouring the needs of older citizens, over the needs of the young. The evidence for this being the outcome of policies implemented by recent governments which have seen the living conditions of many older citizens protected whilst the burden of austerity falls on younger citizens.

The younger generation are finding it impossible to put a roof over their heads at a reasonable cost, they are finding it very difficult to land well-paid work with prospects, they are seeing their access to health care reduced and they are being saddled with debt as never before.

Whatever your view on the whether or not the generations are being treated differently, and whatever your view on the causes of this, the fact that the young feel they are being denied the opportunities enjoyed by their parents and grandparents is not good for the future of society.

Lloyd claims that politicians are favouring the needs of older citizens for the very simple reason that the young don’t vote.

This seems to chime with the current disillusionment with politics in general, where the feeling that politicians are all the same, has put many off voting, especially the young. Many seem to have accepted Russell Brand's counsel of despair.

The solution to this is simple we have to engage, we have to challenge our politicians, we have to demand that they implement policies that ensure a prosperous and stable society for all of us.

We all, young and old, have to start voting.

So Lloyd is dead right, the message to the young has to be – get voting.
