The Hornets have no intention of signing defender Nicolas Frey despite reports in Italy to the contrary, the Watford Observer understands.

Respected Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reported Watford had agreed a deal to sign the Frenchman in principle and the only stumbling block might be if Chievo decided to activate the option of another year in his contract.

However, we understand the Hornets have not agreed a move and have no plans to sign the 30-year-old, who can play in the centre or the right of defence.

Frey started his career at Cannes before spending a decade in Italy. He moved to Legnano in 2004 and after a year switched to Modena, before joining Chievo in 2008.
