Watford played out a low-key 1-0 victory over Bristol City at Vicarage Road, with newly-unearthed goalscorer Kevin Phillips heading his seventh goal in his 13th appearance for the club.
The game was the first played in front of a completed Rookery Stand, which had been constructed during the season at a cost of £1.6 million.
The result confirmed Bristol City's relegation to the third tier; Watford finished seventh having won 11 of their final 15 home games but followed City a year later.
