Watford were beaten 6-1 at St James' Park, Exeter, in the final game of the season.
The game was the last in charge for Watford's longest-serving manager, Harry Kent, and also saw final appearances by both legendary goalkeeper Skilly Williams, controversially given a free transfer to Brighton in the close season, and stalwart left-back Fred Gregory.
