With promotion to the second tier already secured, Watford travelled to Fulham with a chance of securing the Division Two title.
League leaders Bristol City held the initiative, but whispers of three early goals putting City 2-1 down at Preston struggled across a sun-drenched away terrace at Craven Cottage as the Hornets took control with a first-half strike from Gifton Noel-Williams.
Peter Beardsley's equaliser made for a nervous ten minutes before Jason Lee's scuffed winner in front of the travelling support.
For all the club's achievements in the interim, the trophy was the first secured by the senior side since Graham Taylor's team won the fourth division title 20 years earlier.
