HALF-TIME REPORT: Charlton Athletic on course to secure their Championship status against Watford
A fine strike from Callum Harriott sees Charlton Athletic lead Watford 1-0 at half-time during the Hornets’ penultimate game of the season.
The Addicks are looking for the three points which would secure their Championship status, whereas the Golden Boys’ slim play-off hopes ended at the weekend.
Watford had the first chance of the game when Ben Hamer dived at the feet of Troy Deeney after a 40-yard ball by Daniel Tozser released the striker.
The home team started the brighter though and had a few chances to score before the opener midway through the half.
The excellent Chris Solly helped set-up Harriott eight yards from goal but his shot was blocked by Davide Faraoni, who was forced off injured soon after.
Johnnie Jackson had a header and free-kick saved by Jonathan Bond, with the latter initially fumbled by the goalkeeper.
Charlton took the lead when Watford’s defenders allowed Harriott to progress through their half unchallenged before firing a vicious shot into the bottom corner from 20 yards.
The visitors responded well and enjoyed a good ten-minute period when Deeney had a shot parried wide and Essaid Belkalem’s header from the subsequent corner was parried on to the bar by Hamer.
Sean Murray, one of five changes, also wasn’t too far away with a low drive from distance.
But Charlton, who were supported well by their vocal fans, regained control before the break and arguably deserved their lead at the interval.
