Beppe Sannino cancelled the Watford players’ day off today after the 3-1 defeat to Charlton Athletic and stated the club needs to “build a team for next season with a different DNA”.

The Hornets were convincingly beaten by Derby County and Charlton in the space of four days to leave the Hertfordshire side languishing in 13th place and can now finish no higher than 12th.

Sannino started his press conference after the Charlton match by saying: “Watford Football Club have to work. Our season will not finish on Saturday. We will still be working to repay the respect to supporters who come to watch our games. The season is not over for us.”

He later said: “I am not happy with the performance today so tomorrow was supposed to be a day off but all the squad will be at the training ground because we are professionals and we need to improve, so we will work and work and work.

“We will try to do better on Saturday. It is our last game of the season but as I said before, the season is not over for us because we have to work.”

He was asked to explain what the players would be doing after Saturday if the season would not end then.

“Normally the contracts of the players run until the end of June so we will clear this situation behind closed doors but we will work beyond Saturday,” he replied.

“We need to build a team for next season with a different DNA.”

Last night saw Albert Riera become the sixth player to receive a red card in Sannino’s 28 matches in charge.

Sannino said: “We have to reflect why. It was an incident from before and Riera had a warning. I was expecting different behaviour from him.”

The Golden Boys have also received 99 yellow cards so far this season, which is the highest in the Championship for seven years.

Sannino was pressed once again on whether he believes he needs to resolve his team’s discipline problems.

He replied: “The reflection is when you have a lot of bookings, you are not so good when facing your opponents one-versus-one. The basic in football is the one-versus-one; how many times you win the tackle and how many times you cut players off when one-versus-one.”

There will be more comments from Sannino uploaded in due course.
