Troy Deeney has capped a memorable season by winning the prestigious Watford Observer Player of the Season award.

The Hornets’ top scorer, who has netted 24 goals in all competitions, was neck-and-neck in the first week of polling with runner-up Gabriele Angella but the striker’s strong end to the campaign looks to have been decisive in him securing the award.

Deeney was presented with the trophy by former Watford Observer deputy editor Oli Phillips and sponsors SA Law shortly before kick-off with Huddersfield Town this afternoon and it will be handed to him again at the club’s end-of-season dinner tomorrow night.

Having pushed his team-mate for the trophy, Angella was comfortably in second place while Daniel Pudil held off the challenge of Fernando Forestieri to come third in the award standings.

Deeney is the first Watford striker since Danny Graham in 2011 to win the award and succeeds last year’s victor Almen Abdi.
