Managerless since the departure of Mike Keen six weeks previously and with little to play for, the Hornets travelled to the Vetch Field to face Swansea City.
The home side required wins in their final two games to guarantee promotion to the third division and so were stunned to find themselves four goals down at the interval; Alan Mayes (twice), Keith Mercer and Ross Jenkins were the scorers, with Bobby Downes inflicting much of the damage down the left flank.
Jeremy Charles pulled a goal back in the second half for the Swans, who would have to wait 12 months for promotion behind the Hornets.
