Watford want Matej Vydra to return and are in talks with other potential signings

The Hornets are hoping to re-sign last season's top scorer Matej Vydra and are in negotiations with other potential signings, the Watford Observer understands.

Vydra scored 22 goals in 47 games during the 2012/13 campaign as the Golden Boys just missed out on automatic promotion to the Premier League and then lost the play-off final, when the striker was forced off injured at half-time.

The 22-year-old's form earned him a new five-year contract with parent club Udinese last summer and a loan move to the Premier League, with West Bromwich Albion.

However, the Czech Republic international has only scored three goals in nine starts and 14 substitute appearances in all competitions.

Vydra enjoyed his time at Watford and with the Pozzo family controlling both Udinese and the Hornets, we understand the owners are keen for the striker to return as the Championship club attempt to secure Premier League football at the third attempt.

West Ham United, Swansea City and Tottenham Hotspur were among Vydra's suitors last summer but another loan move to a Premier League club appears unlikely.

And with the player's value declining over the last 12 months, and another four years on his Udinese contract, it also seems unlikely Vydra will be allowed to leave for a non-Pozzo owned club on the cheap.

Watford endured a difficult campaign as they lost their final four matches to finish in the bottom half of the table in 13th - 12 points below the play-off places.

The Hornets are keen to complete the majority of their business as early as possible this summer and Vydra is one of several players already identified.

The Golden Boys are closing in on the permanent signing of loanee Daniel Tozser and the club are also in talks with the representatives of other transfer targets.

Good news for us and him. No point in staying at WBA and barely playing. Maybe it would convince troy to stay too.

I doubt that Troy will stay just because his old strike partner might be returning. He'll take the prem riches while he can and who could possibly blame him. If he stays at Watford and it doesn't work, he might have blown his only chance to play at the highest level. Having said that and whilst I love the guy, I think he'll struggle in the prem just like our Danny did. Maybe Danny and Matej could work together ??? Just a thought.

It would easily be the hardest working striking partnership in the division although I suspect Danny would prefer to stay in the north east.

It may well be we had a lot of that last year - best part of the article is that we are looking to get things tied up a lot earlier this season. Zola worked some miracle the previous year sorting 40 players (all new to him) AND getting us into the playoffs but a proper pre-season has got to help.

All good news if true, however the critical signing is that of manager (forget the cr*p head coach rubbish).

I think David Moyes would be an excellent choice for himself and Watford. It could be a really good 5 year project to get Watford into the premier, stabilise, who knows even do a Southampton or better push for a Euro place.

Moyes must be hurting 'big time' could be just the project he's looking for!

Moyes? Did you see what he did at Man Utd? If he cannot succeed there how would he cope at Watford. Who cares if Moyes could be "hurting big time"!. Given the right squad (Vydra, Deeney, Forestieri) and a new, decent keeper, Sannini could be the right man, better than Moyes any way.

Either that or he "burned out" - the guy was 21 years old and had played 1 competitive match in the previous 2 seasons. A tough Championship season, mixed with internationals, took its toll.

A fit Abdi, Toszer permanently signed and Vydra back is just the spice this team needs to go from mid-table to table topping!

If Tozser and Vydra both come off, the impact on our promotion chances will be massive.

I do think though that we could do with a big presence in goal. I love Almunia, but would personally like to see him as back-up... get Bond out on loan for the season and bring a number one in who is big in voice and stature. I put our fragility down to a lack of real leadership at the back, because Ekstrand, Hoban, Angella and Lloyd are ALL good enough. They all just need organising.

I'm also - still, and like a child - clinging to the notion of Di Matteo as boss.
Would love to see that.

it would be great if we could sign vydra, but we must have deeney next season the vydra+deeney partnership was great one we know works & was great to watch, having said that we will have to make a big improvemet with our defence, if sannino is to be replaced!! I would like to a british coach with championship experience given chance, brian mcdermont& nigel gibbs any body!!

I posted a few weeks ago that Vydra was buying a house in Watford as he was going to re-join the Horns my source also added that Malky was coming back to manage . We all know that rumours are just that, and that the good ones rarely seem to come to fruition . But my fingers are crossed. COYH

That's what I thought. I had to go on the official website to check before I made a bigger fool of myself!

Whoops.... ...

I had just read the other story about Pudil being one of a trio who might be called up for pre-world cup friendlies and was too lazy to check (even though it crossed my mind). I'm not match fit for the World Cup, yet, clearly...

Vydra and Toser if only we could keep Deeney we could thenake a real push for the Premiership. Come on Pozzos show your Commitment and ensure Deeney stays.

Not sure about this. He definitely won't go to another club in England, but he could possibly be shipped out somewhere in a top league in Europe.
As for 'being in talks with other possible signings', who what where when. Probably best not to say anything till the ink is dry on the contracts. Only gives us false hope as fans
