Defying the popular belief that he would not relinquish the chairmanship of Watford Football Club in his lifetime, Jim Bonser made the unanticipated decision to step down from his position after 18 years at the helm.
His replacement was described by the Watford Observer as a "serious-looking young gentleman in a striped tee-shirt, subdued jacket and slacks and mauve-tinted spectacles."
Elton John was to oversee - and financially support - the most successful period in the club's history.
