Bushey Sports Club Veterans were beaten on penalties by Shamblers FC in the final of the Umbro National Veterans Cup on Sunday.

Despite falling at the final hurdle, Bushey were still able to complete a treble for the second season running after lifting the County Cup, League Cup and Hertfordshire Senior County League Premier Division.

Bushey took the tie to extra-time with a 2-2 draw thanks to goals from former Ipswich Town winger Darren Currie and Ross Shorto but were eventually beaten 4-2 on penalties by the Stoke side.

Reflecting on defeat to Shamblers at Stockport County’s Edgeley Park Stadium, manager Darren Glenister was philosophical.

“If you’d have asked me at the beginning of the season, I’d have taken this; maintaining our treble. We were runners-up out of 32 teams in the country – we’ll take that,” said the Veterans’ boss.

“We had enough chances to win the game and we should have finished the game off in normal time, we hit the post a couple of time and it just wouldn’t go in. I didn’t think we would do it on penalties, truth be told.

“They were a good team, very organised, but we gave it a real good go in the last ten or 15 minutes and couldn’t force it,” Glenister added.
