The line-up for the last 16 of the Watford Observer Fourteen14 Shield should be closer to being known tomorrow, weather permitting, with only one tie in the delayed first round still to be played.

Kings Langley are due to take on Chenies & Latimer tomorrow, but this evening's scheduled clash between Rickmansworth School Staff’s clash with Watford Haidery A needs to be rearranged after it was postponed due to the earlier rain.

Watford Grammar School for Boys, Chipperfield Clarendon and Rickmansworth have all joined Punjabi Panthers in reaching the second round, while Langleybury A now have a wait to find out who they will face in the quarter-finals after easily overcoming Watford Town B in the only round two tie to be played so far.

Watford Grammar would have been in with a chance of winning the Plate for a third successive year – they still might depending on how they fare against West Herts in the next round – but they proved too strong for Aldenham, prevailing by 23 runs on Tuesday.

Knocks of 32 from Luke Samarasinghe and Matt Grinham’s 33 enabled the school to post 144 off their 14, eight-ball overs.

In reply, Aldenham were dismissed for 121 after Aaron Mitchell claimed three for 26 and Jon Shafe took three for 32.

The most comprehensive first round winners to date have been Rickmansworth after they thumped Langleybury B by 110 runs on Thursday of last week.

Batting first on a slow and low track, Malcolm Aerington (45) and Chris Morris (30) opened the batting for Rickmansworth, taking them to 50 after just three overs.

Chris Hewett (two for 42) bowled Morris and Fraser Paterson the following over to give Langleybury some hope, but once Aerington was joined by Ray Collins (30) the rate continued to climb.

When they eventually both fell, Marty Jaynes (34 not out) took over the scoring duties, taking Rickmansworth to an impressive 170 for 6.

Within two balls of their reply Langleybury were in trouble as Brett Harvey (three for nine), bowling with good pace, rearranged the opener’s stumps. He continued to trouble the opposition and when Murtaza Shehabi (two for two) and Brendan Lindsay (two for three) joined the attack the writing was already on the wall.

Langleybury battled on to reach 60 for nine from their 14 overs, but after a fine all-round display the laurels went to a well-deserving Rickmansworth.

Chipperfield Clarendon (151 for six) got the better of Frogmore (128 for seven) on Thursday, while on the same evening Langleybury A advanced to the last eight with a ten-wicket beating of Watford Town B.

Fine figures of four for 15 from Ross Channer restricted Watford to 74 for nine before their opponents eased to the target in seven overs as Nahim Amin cracked an unbeaten 58 off just 33 deliveries.
