In the face of considerable competition, Watford secured the services of Brentford striker Billy Lane for a fee just short of £1,000.
Lane had scored twice against his new employers the previous December, as Brentford had become the first visitors to record a win at Vicarage Road that season.
He was to average more than a goal every other game in almost four years with the club.
