After 41 goals in two seasons, Paul Furlong joined Glenn Hoddle's Chelsea for £2.3m, almost doubling Watford's record transfer receipt.

Manager Glenn Roeder explained: "We were just about to put the finishing touches to a new contract for Paul, one he was happy to sign, when four Premiership clubs came in for him."

Paul Furlong was a big favourite of mine in a poor team.

Still got fond memories of the mass goal bundle celebration when he equalised against West Ham and I ended up half way down the South Bank terrace at Upton Park. My West Ham supporting mate in the North Bank told me afterwards how noisy he thought the Watford fans were that day and all the abuse Tim Breaker got that day...Magic! Don't get that nowadays.
