Watford sign former West Bromwich Albion and Doncaster Rovers defender Gabriel Tamas

Watford Observer: Picture: Action Images Picture: Action Images

Watford have completed the signing of experienced centre half Gabriel Tamas.

The 30-year-old spent the second half of this season at Doncaster Rovers, where he made 13 starts and one substitute appearance for the side as they were relegated from the Championship.

Tamas has played for a host of clubs during his career including Galatasaray, Spartak Moscow, Auxerre and Celta Vigo.

The Romanian international spent three and a half years at West Bromwich Albion, making 77 appearances before his contract expired.

Tamas has had several off-the-field problems in the past.

In 2011 the defender and ex-Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu were given life bans by Romania after drinking before a friendly match, although the bans were lifted 43 days later.

In June he was arrested and jailed after kicking in a door to get into a block of flats in Bucharest. He was said to be drunk at the time and was arrested after falling asleep on the first floor.

In October last year his contract with Romanian club CFR Cluj was terminated after just a week due to alcohol-related incidents.

He was also involved in a nightclub fracas whilst at Doncaster Rovers which resulted in the defender suffering a fractured cheek bone.

Will be interesting to see if Sannino will play this guy ahead of Hoban. Either way, an excellent replacement for Ekstrand when he most likely leaves this summer.

I am getting the impression that we really mean business next season. Three experienced players signed so far, all with several years experience in the English game - they tick the boxes that a lot of fans thought were un-ticked last summer by the signings we made back then.

My only concern is for the home grown quota, but we have plenty of time to address that and the former academy players may make more of an impact next season.

Don't get carried away with this signing. We do not know if he is any better than Essaid Belkalem or Reece Brown yet, both Nani signings!

Relegated with Donny, and kept out of the side at time by our rejected Lucas Neil???

I notice on the WFC site that Fitz Hall is still registered, but that Brown is not.

If he can keep fit, Fitz is the man for me, and we need at least six Brits in the matchday squad remember!

Mnnnnn......looks iffy one to me..if cover signing then OK...Hoban and Angella and Ekstrand all much better....and if only Fitz was able to stay fit then that would be a bonus. Suspect he will exit though. Need some talent and Angella has that in buckets and spades..........few more like him would be good.....Beasty Bekalem has to be on way out? Didnt see much of him but what I did left me worried ....

Joking apart, I think I'll reserve judgement on this lad. A quality player in his day, certainly into his time at West Brom, and he has played for quality clubs across Europe. An excellent international career. However, his career has deteriorated in the last two years or so, at the same time as his alcohol related incidents have increased.
We'll see. If he applies himself, he could be a real asset.

We're making signings very early in pre-season and solid ones by the looks of it and supporters are already moaning. Dyer has just played a big part in Leicester getting promoted, Gomes has played a vast number of top flight games and is an international and now we have signed another international player who has played top flight fotball across Europe.. what more do some people want?!!! We were screwed as a club only a couple of seasons ago, potless, only going in one direction and that was down, suddenly our expectations are sky high and nothing is good enough. We have wealthy owners investing on and off the pitch making a clear indication of their intentions, some fans need to have a look at themselves in my view.

On reflection, this signing, by next Christmas, will either be rated as a stroke of genius, or the contract will have been torn up and he'll have been sent on his way.
Sounds like someone at the club has taken a gamble on this one.

Ekstrand is a donkey.
Berkhalem was an International and a not very good one for us!
Well like many on here who cannot believe this signing I think he will love all what the nightlife our town can give him, Oceana etc!
Yes, his had loads of performances for all clubs but not very convincing.
I think we'll be reading about him for all the wrong reasons but maybe his just been at the wrong clubs and I've got him all wrong!
I am mystified with the person who thinks that the Pozzo/Nani have got it right by signing this type of player, instead of loading us normally with Udinese or euro players that have not been good enough for us so far.
Time will tell, however, Lloyd Dyer, Gomes are a good choice but I'm not sure about this choice.

Seems to me like the Pozzos are acquiring experienced players, something which we've been crying out for since the departure of Eustace. Now whether this bloke is good enough or not remains to be seen, but he's certainly been around the block a few times. Gomes largely falls into the same category, although I strangely feel more confident about him and I have no complaints to make about Dyer. That makes one very good signing, one good signing and one maybe. Compared to last season's summer, where we had lots of 'Who?' moments, we're doing better so far. Getting our business done early as well, as opposed to last year when we seemed to have new signings arriving well into the start of the season.

Totally agree, too much negativity now that we have decent owners who want Watford to succeed. Not many years ago summer 'signongs' would be a couple of lads from the academy and a couple of free transferfoos of journeyman footballers at the end of their career.

I know nothing (like most of us) about this guy. I am sure some background work has been done, so let's not prejudge. Point to prove - he just might have (like Gomas)... last chance saloon et al!

Remember Tony Coton had baggage when he arrived from Birmingham City so keep an open mind. Tony is in my living memory the best keeper we have ever had, so let's see Tamas before condemning or for that matter praising him.

One year contract only so if it doesn't work ship him out on loan in January. Nothing ventured nothing gained etc...

Seems Nani and the owners want business done early.

We need to get real we are NOT going to attract even with the Pozzos behind us players from the very top table. Most likely the players we attract are going to have a failing or two - Marlon King, Tony Coton, Ronnie Rosenthal...., you get my meaning, or there are at the fag end of their careers - Alan Devonshire, Stuart Slater, Malky Mackay, Pat Rice, Brian Talbot etc.

I wish that the negativity that pervades this forum and others could be transformed into an equal and opposite positivity. we would be half way there if it did. Well 25% at least.

Onwards you horns!!!

The Baggie fans in my wife's family have just responded to my inquiries re Tamas and it seems that he was well liked for his on-pitch activities with not much known about his off-pitch life during his spell at The Hawthorns.

One comment was 'he should be a decent player in the Championship' but as a bit of water has passed under the bridge since his WBA days we shall have to see for ourselves. Still, if he does only have a one year contract with us it could work out and Sannino might just frighten him into behaving himself.

That's more likely than us, but never say never. Di Matteo is apparently still earning £130k pw from Chelsea. Unless we break the wage structure, which is unlikely, then Di Matteo is likely to get elsewhere. Last December it was rumoured he was going back to WBA and now the Southampton job is available. Both of these would be more attractive than the horns.

Teams in Sweden want him, and although he's been making the first team a lot, I almost think because he's probably one of about 3 defenders in our squad who has managed to stay more or less permanently fit, he's not the best defender in the world...

As for Tamas, I don't see any reason to say either way who Sannino would prefer in the first team. It's going to depend on how they perform preseason. Hoban lacks experience, has missed a lot of game time because of injury, and isn't very strong for a CB.

Several off the field problems, yes, and apparently, a problem at most clubs he goes too. He will be cover for our defence, but will have to improve a heck of a lot to be a regular. Will reserve judgement on Gomes and Tamas. Dyer is an excellent signing at this level.

Totally agree, too much negativity now that we have decent owners who want Watford to succeed. Not many years ago summer 'signongs' would be a couple of lads from the academy and a couple of free transferfoos of journeyman footballers at the end of their career.
So far we have signed 3 players in their 30s...... Probably the last moves of their careers....on free transfers. Not much has changed really.

A bewildering signing that fills me with no confidence whatsoever. Ekstrand didn't have a good season this year but played well the season before. I'd give him a few more matches. Let's hope Tamas replaces Bekalem.

Hall is ate of space as always injured! How many matches has he played in the last few years ? Even on a pay as you play he is a waste of money!
Neill DID NOT keep him out the team - he was injured!
