Gianluca Villa signed 30-year-old Swiss international Ramon Vega from Tottenham Hotspur.

With the centre-back out of contract at White Hart Lane, no fee was incurred; however eyebrows were raised when Vega turned down Celtic, with whom he had spent six months on loan the previous season, with the Hornets apparently offering a more generous financial package.

Vega played his final game for Watford the following February, having reacted negatively to being placed on the transfer list as the club sought to cut their wage bill.

Oh dear god!
Do you really have to remind us of the most god awful waste of space to have ever pulled on a Watford shirt (yes even compared to some recent signings like Neill etc)?
Far too overpaid at £20k a week (personally I don't think he was worth even 20p a week while he was at the club).
Also, if you wouldn't mind not mentioning a certain former manager (who has been mentioned in this article) ever again it would be greatly apprecited!

Yes as Rob7 says a nomination for the Hall of Ar5e.

By the Feb despite his 3 year deal Viali knew he had a dud.

One of those dreadful experiments - 8 highly paid players on 3 year deals and I think only two were any good, and one other made a big effort. This was on top of a pre-Viali buys of Baardsen and Nielson that left us with an out of control wage bill.

We must not forget as I think feedback in the Wobby is listened to. Like for example we are now recruiting Championship experienced players.

Apart from Ellington, the worse signing I can remember (except for Kerry Dixscum, but I assume he didn't cost as much!).

Not as bad as the other centre back; Piere Issa. The one who the stretcher bearers dropped behind the Rookery goal. Even they knew how useless he was.

What do you mean ... he was the most accomplished centre half we have ever had!!!! Well the only one who could defend and comb his perm at the same time - almost. Overpaid, over-hyped and over his head.

We had to pay nearly 4m to buy Ellington and then pay or subsidise his pay for 3 years. Vega was a cheaper b@lls up but still an unqualified disaster.
