England played Argentina in the quarter-finals of the World Cup at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

With the game goalless at half-time, Argentine captain Diego Maradona scored twice within the first ten minutes of the second period, the first of which was the notorious 'hand of God' goal.

With 15 minutes to go, Watford's John Barnes made his World Cup debut, coming on as substitute for Trevor Steven. Four minutes later he crossed from the left for Gary Lineker to pull a goal back.

With minutes to go Barnes supplied Lineker in identical fashion, but Julio Olarticoechea narrowly beat him to the ball and England went out of the tournament to the eventual world champions.
