A POPULAR reading event is getting bigger each year.

Schools in Burgess Hill put on an exciting programme of events during Get Caught Reading Week, all designed to get everyone reading.

This is the third year Burgess Hill schools have organised Get Caught Reading Week and it is expected to continue.

Activities in schools include Drop Everything and Read, where the bell goes and children and staff stop and read for ten minutes.

Schools have decorated reading thrones for pupils to read on, and well-known poets and authors have visited the youngsters.

Last Thursday 250 children from nine schools took blankets and their favourite books to St John’s Park and sat down to read together.

The children loved reading in the sunshine with hundreds of others and some parents could not believe how peaceful and engrossed the children were.

Head teachers said they hope the event will remind families to take books away with them on holidays or to perhaps go back to the park with books throughout the summe
