Watford athletes Michael Pope and Mitchell Dutton both ended on the podium at the English Senior Disability Championships.

Both competitors, who are trained by Malcolm Wallace, have started the season in fine form. Pope clinched the Herts County indoor senior men’s shot put title before claiming the discus and shot put titles at the British Universities Outdoor Championships.

Dutton won the Under-20 discus title at the Outdoor County Championships and sealed bronze in the shot.

The Disability Championships, held in Birmingham, saw the duo compete against each other in the shot put and the discus.

In the shot, Pope’s throw of 9.36m metres was enough for him to secure a silver medal while Dutton ended in fourth.

Dutton then took in the javelin and produced a gold medal winning throw of 36.52m to clinch the English title. The duo had to wait until Sunday afternoon to compete in their final event, the discus.

Despite the rain both managed to throw near their personal bests with Dutton coming out on top with a throw of 34.63m which saw him secure a silver medal. Pope had to settle for bronze after achieving a distance of 25.74m.

This coming weekend the duo travel to Doncaster to compete in the CP Grand Prix.

Wallace explained: "They are both looking to gain selection to either the European Championships or the World Junior Championships this year and they have to show the selectors that they are meeting the A standard on a regular basis"
