Old Merchant Taylors' exited the Cricketer Cup after they were heavily beaten by Old Cranleighans

The hosts produced a powerful performance built on a superb 176 by Jack Scriven and an opening bowling spell by Will Rollings, which ripped apart the OMT top-order batting.

Old Cranleighans won the toss and opted to bat despite heavy cloud cover and the strong possibility of rain showers.

Their decision was a sound one as the wicket proved flat and true and the outfield was quick. The OMT bowlers were unable to exert any real control and run scoring looked straightforward from the start. Seren Waters and Scriven put on 175 for the first wicket before Tom Woods found the breakthrough, bowling Waters for 66.

Woods, in his first season after leaving school, bowled some useful deliveries but having played little cricket so far this year struggled to find his usual rhythm and accuracy.

Jawwad Rasheed picked up a couple of late wickets but the damage was already done as Old Cranleighans posted a massive 332 for four in their allotted 50 overs.

OMT never got going in reply and found themselves 18 for three as Rollings took the early wickets of Phil Wise, Richard Booth and Rasheed.

Matt Crump followed up with two more wickets and OMT were in desperate trouble at 21 for five.

There was to be no way back for the visitors and apart from a few lusty blows by Andrew Sharland, who top-scored with 31, OMT subsided to 80 all out after 26 overs.

Team manager Philip Newfield said: “Old Cranleighans never allowed us to play to the standard and intensity of which we are capable, and although all our players competed as best they could, it was a thoroughly disappointing early exit to the 2014 competition.”
