YORK'S Harry Bromwich is travelling to Scotland today - to take part in the Commonwealth Games.

Bromwich is in England's squad for the rugby league 9s tournament - which makes its bow in the Games this year as an exhibition sport prior to the main Glasgow 2014 extravaganza that starts on July 23.

And he can't wait to don the kit.

"I'm really looking forward to it," said the 18-year-old, who made the 15-strong squad after it was whittled down from an initial train-on party of 24.

"Representing your country - how can you not look forward to it. The Commonwealth Games is massive."

Rugby league was accepted as a category three sport by the Commonwealth Games sports review committee in 2011, so makes it debut this year with the view to gaining full inclusion by 2022.

This exhibition competition is an under-19s championship involving five of the six Commonwealth regions. It will be contested by South Africa, Canada, Jamaica, England, Scotland, Wales, Australia and Papua New Guinea.

England are fielding an amateur team, and 18-year-old Bromwich, who plays for York Acorn ARLC, having started out at Thanet Road aged six, got his call-up after impressing for BARLA Great Britain U17s last year.

Australia, though, are the huge favourites, represented by an U19s team from NRL giants Sydney Roosters. Among their party are starlets who have played for New South Wales and Queensland at youth level, and Johnny Tuivasa-Sheck, the highly-rated younger brother of New Zealand superstar Roger.

"They're the absolute clear favourites," said utility ace Bromwich. "I think some Super League clubs were keen to have their U19s represent England but the Rugby Football League decided to do it this way - which is obviously great for me.

"We haven't got Australia in our group so, who knows, we might meet them in the final."

Group matches take place tomorrow at the Broadwood Stadium, North Lanarkshire, with the knockout ties on Saturday. England are in a group with PNG, Canada and South Africa.
