Mitchell Smith is keen not to appear disrespectful towards his opponent ahead of their English title fight on Wednesday but is also a confident enough to state "there are levels in boxing and I believe I am a level above Peter Cope".

The two men fight for the vacant English super featherweight title at the iconic York Hall in Bethnal Green next Wednesday, which will be broadcast on BoxNation at 7pm.

Both are undefeated. Former Bushey Boxing Club fighter Smith has knocked out half of his eight opponents whilst Cope has won all of his nine bouts on points.

Smith said: "A lot of people have digged me out and said I am looking past him but I am 100 per cent focussed on this fight and I will make sure I am 100 per cent prepared because I will fight the best Peter Cope there is.

"But there are levels in boxing and I believe I am a level above Peter Cope. That is not to say he is not English title level but I believe I can go on to bigger and better things and I think I am a better boxer. Come July 16 I will show him that when I give him a boxing lesson and open him up."

He continued: "There is no bad blood there and I am not trying to disrespect anyone because boxing is a hard sport to do well in. If you get in the ring then you are a champion any way but for me to go on to better things I have to beat the likes of Peter Cope. I believe I will and I don't think he will be able to lay a glove on me.

"I am looking forward to showing that and then saying to people 'there is your 50-50 fight'."

Smith's preparation was helped by spending eight days training at Matthew Macklin's MGM gym in Marbella, alongside ex-Bushey ABC fighter Miles Shinkwin, current stable-mate Tony Conquest and trainer Jason Rowland.

Smith, who lives in Harrow, sparred with former Irish amateur star Declan Geraghty and Team GB Boxing captain Thomas Stalker during his time at MGM.

Smith, 21, said: "We have had class southpaw sparring and my preparation couldn't be going better. You can't beat sparring with the likes of Stalker, who competed at the London Olympics.

"We have had some good names over here as well. I don't want to go into details, I would rather keep it quiet but we have had a few big names which I will tell people about after the fight.

"Everything seems to have gone to plan and I am just counting down the days now so I can pick up that title."
