Yellow and Red Lion to be transferred to Laurence Bassini's liquidator by Watford

Yellow and Red Lion to be transferred to Bassini's liquidator

Yellow and Red Lion to be transferred to Bassini's liquidator

First published in Sport by

Watford FC still own the freehold for the Yellow and Red Lion pub on Vicarage Road but it will eventually be transferred to the liquidator for Laurence Bassini.

The Hornets agreed to give the pub to former owner Bassini as part of the Pozzos' takeover in 2012.

However, the club held on to the freehold because Bassini had his assets frozen as part his court proceedings with the Russo brothers.

Bassini was made bankrupt for a second time at the beginning of June and Watford this week confirmed the pub will eventually be transferred to the Stanmore businessman's liquidator.

I suspect that's the end of the pub. The liquidators will get far more by selling it for development than they will by selling it as a going concern.

Yes, that'll spell the end of the pub. The only chance for it now is refusal of planning permission.

Let's hope the council ensure the building is not demolished, would be a shame to lose it. With700 flats to be built on the allotments, it might make a good restaurant if not a good pub!

Just re read story, strange freehold not transferred at time of sale of the club. Did Bassini actually receive anything or in reality did the Pozzo's pay the money to the Russos with the pub as Bassini's commission?

Whilst I LOVE seeing this guy 'fail' the ones who actually lose out in this is those who he owed money too. HE owed US 1.5 million (cash advances for graham transfer) but this will never be paid. That money is obviously squirrelled away somewhere where a liquidator cant touch it (swiss bank account etc) so he may be declared bankrupt but I imagine he isn't short of money.

Whilst the Pozzos provisioned for this within the acquisition (this is the LNOC court case) it is probably the Russo's who actually have lost out and for all their failings as owners at least I think their heart was in the right place.

As for the red lion - we the supporters lose out as that was a good facility for those who wanted a beer or two before a home game - that will be gone now as it will likely be sold for residential development.

Whilst I would love nothing more than to see him living under a cardboard box in Watford high street I very much doubt he is as really as stupid as he looks....lets just hope he is NEVER allowed to own a football club again.

Oh dear I think you are giving him far too much respect as a businessman. He has now repeatedly failed in everything he has attempted. The guy is a total bafoon and chancer with a quick eye for a profit. Unfortunately for us he is hopeless at that as well. It won't be the last time we hear about him. But the very last vest ages of his association with us are just about gone. Good riddance!

So it has happy memories for me and will be a shame if it goes, as someone said there's a great lack of pubs in West Watford.

Dodgy dealer or not, if he saved the club from going into administration before the Pozzos could get their act together, then we should be grateful for small mercies. We should thank our lucky starts that we did not become a basket case like Portsmouth.

It's been proven not to be a viable business as a pub and so it's likely to be bought with the aim of changing use to convert it into resi flats. Makes you wonder if the club would want it as short term accommodation for loanees until they find something more permanent? Must be cheaper and less alien then putting them up in hotels.

I wonder why the lease has been given back by the Pozzo's to the liquidator? Obviously it makes it easier now to dispose of the asset, but to whom?
