Daniel Tozser has stressed the importance of Watford keeping Troy Deeney with three clubs interested in the striker.

Swansea City and Norwich City have made enquiries about the 26-year-old while Burnley are the only club to make an official offer, which we understand was an initial fee of around £4.5m with additional add-ons.

At the time of going to press, Burnley’s bid remained the only official offer the Hornets had received for last season’s top scorer and was made last week.

We understand the enquiries made by both Norwich and Swansea related to a higher fee than Burnley’s bid.

With the Pozzos in charge Watford are no longer in a position where they have to sell players every summer to balance the books, unlike under previous regimes.

And Tozser, who signed a two-year loan deal with the Hornets on Monday, said: “I know 90 per cent of the guys here and it is a great group. Promotion is the target of course and I think that is possible. It’s a big thing to say but I do think the team is stronger than last year.

“There is interest in the transfer market in Troy but I hope the board are able to keep him at Watford because he is very, very important for us. I would be very happy if he stays at Watford.”

It is commonly accepted that all players have a price at which they will be sold but the current £5m figures being mentioned are significantly less than Watford’s valuation of Deeney.

Sky Sports News reported on Wednesday that Swansea had made an offer in excess of £5m for the striker.

However, we understand that report relates to a previous enquiry made by the Premier League side which was immediately rebuffed by the Hornets.

Interest in Deeney was expected this summer after he enjoyed his most prolific campaign last season.

He netted 25 goals in 48 matches to become the first player since Luther Blissett to score 20 times in all competitions in consecutive campaigns for the club.

His tally of 24 Championship goals also meant he became the first Hornet to strike on 20 occasions in back-to-back league seasons since Cliff Holton in 1961.
