Glenn Hoddle's Chelsea were the visitors to Vicarage Road for the testimonial of long-serving midfielder Gary Porter.
The only goal of the evening came from Paul Furlong, sold by Watford for a record transfer fee earlier in the summer, who struck a right-foot shot past on-trial goalkeeper Alan Judge.
Furlong was to complete the game partnering Neil Shipperley in the visitors' attack, one of a number of strikers brought in on loan by Watford in an attempt to fill the void in their forward line the following season.
