Beppe Sannino has confirmed Troy Deeney is Watford's captain heading into the 2014/15 campaign.

Last season Manuel Almunia was skipper but the veteran goalkeeper left the club in the summer after his contract expired.

Deeney filled in when Almunia was absent and yesterday Sannino confirmed Deeney was the club captain.

The 26-year-old is a big personality in the dressing room and Sannino has often praised his character.

Deeney has been the subject of transfer bids this summer and has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs, including Leicester City, Burnley, Swansea City, Norwich City, Everton and more recently Queens Park Rangers.

There will be more from Sannino in Friday's Watford Observer. Information on subscribing to the newspaper can be found here.

All players have a price, it's probably 10M in this case, if he goes, good luck to him, but announcing this, right now, tells me that we are not letting him go until our valuation is met.

This must tell us that Troy is staying. The Coach and the Pozzos are giving Troy the message. Stay with us because next season you will "Troy" be playing in the Prem very soon. Almen can support Troy as can many of the new imports. Build the training pitch and the dressing room ethos. Rock on WFC we are getting there.

Does this endorse what I said yesterday when the article was published re latest offer being turned down from Leicester City??

Perhaps Deeney has taken note of Vydra's unfortunate time on the bench at WBA last season and does not want the same. A very astute move by the Club to reinforce their intention of promotion this season and enables them to (hopefully) keep hold of one of their prize assets at Vicarage Road unless a really stupid offer is put on the table. Cannot wait for the start of the season, COYH.

If Southampton can unload their "squad regulars" for £20m a go - then Troy has to be a £10m man and then some.

No nonsense about untested in the top flight - he kicked **** against promoted sides and had Man City silenced.

This is a very astute move. Troy is the obvious choice to be captain because of his leadership on and off the field.

The more important factor here, I think, is the message this sends to Troy from his own club - i.e. "You are an important part of this team and you are highly valued. The job of Club Captain is the pinnacle of a player's club career and you have achieved it with Watford FC, a club with a great future in the Premier League sooner rather than later and you could play a major part in that future"

If Troy goes to any of the clubs mentioned he can look forward to at least one season of trying to establish himself in the team and also taking part in a relegation battle or mid table mediocrity.

Lots of chat about McCormack going for £11m so Deeney being worth the same. Lets remember that Rickie Lambert and Frazier Campbell have gone for £4m and £800k respectively - they are both England internationals (somehow).

Turning down £7.5m is a strong statement from the club. Making him captain is too.

No it's not it's a ploy to up the bidding.
It's saying we are prepared to keep him as we value him, don't insult us
And this ups the ante.
My guess is he's going to Everton for ten million plus.
He will not play for us this season, but this is the projects way
And ten is a good price IMO.

Making him captain is saying to other clubs "we're serious about the asking price, we don't think you're going to match it, we're not worried if he doesn't go and we expect him to stay. Prove us wrong and come up with £10m in cash".

bid up to 8 million.

I think if Burnley/ Leicester are willing to pay 8

Then a desperate QPR, Swansea, West Ham, Southampton would pay 10+

Only advantage with selling to Burnley is we can have him back in a year when they go down and we go up!

I say keep him until Jan, see how we sit, with another 20 goals in the bag the price required will be even higher. Sell him to a desperate club fighting relegation, with a first refusal buy back clause. We can then secure promotion and buy him back from the club we sell him to as we pass each other in May.
