Watford will become the third visitors to Meadow Park this week as manager Ian Allinson puts his side through their paces ahead of the new season.

Boreham Wood finished in 13th place in the Conference South last term - 13 points above the relegation zone and 16 points adrift of the play-off places, with victory in the Herts Senior Cup final sealing a good season for the Hertfordshire outfit.

The Wood opened their pre-season campaign with a 3-1 home defeat against Championship new-boys Brentford last Thursday.

Goals from Kevin O’Connor, Jake Bidwell and a Josh Hill own goal secured the win for the Bees; Boreham Wood scoring their consolation through player-coach Luke Garrard from the penalty spot.

Last Saturday, FA Cup holders Arsenal became the second side to make the trip to Meadow Park, emerging 2-0 winners in a keenly-contested clash.

The Gunners helped officially open the club’s new 890-seater West Stand, and in front of a capacity crowd of 3,000, Allinson’s men more than held their own against their illustrious opponents.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger included the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Tomas Rosicky and Abou Diaby in his travelling party, with the international trio interspersed amongst a number of youngster talents.

Under-18s midfielder Kris Olsson got the opener after the break, before Benik Afobe netted the second from the penalty spot in the dying minutes.

Goalkeeper James Russell was in inspired form for the host between the sticks, denying Arsenal forward Yaya Sanogo on a number of occasions.

League Two newcomers Cambridge United visited Meadow Park on Tuesday evening, with the two sides playing out a stalemate.

Wood boss Allinson used the match rest several players and take a look at several others on the fringes, whilst skipper Sam Cox got 90 minutes under his belt alongside summer recruit, Scott Thomas, for the first time.

Thomas joined from Southern Premier Division side Chesham United this summer after losing out to St Albans City in the Southern Premier Division play-off final for a place in the Conference South.

The Wood made their second signing of the summer a fortnight ago when winger-cum-forward Lee Angol re-signed on loan from Luton Town.

Formerly of Tottenham Hotspur and Wycombe Wanderers, the 19-year-old attacker joined the Hatters on a free transfer after being released by the Chairboys at the end of last season.

Immediately loaned to the Wood, Angol made 22 appearances and scored eight times whilst on loan at the club last season.

There will be a familiar face in the hosts’ squad this evening, with one-time Hornet Matty Whichelow currently on the books at Meadow Park.

Whichelow, 21, came through the Hornets academy before being released by mutual consent last February. The attacking midfielder-cum-winger made 24 first-team appearances for the Hornets and scored three times.
