Bushey swimmer Katie Armitage has qualified for the semi-finals of the 100m breaststroke at the Commonwealth Games after producing a superb performance in the heats.

Representing host nation Scotland, the 18-year-old finished second in her heat behind 200m breaststroke silver medallist Sally Hunter in a time of 1.08.81 to qualify fourth fastest for tonight's semi-finals.

The Hatfield club member, who formerly represented Watford Swimming Club, was in contention from the outset, turning in second place, 0.12 of a second adrift of another Australian, 50m breaststroke gold medallist Leiston Pickett.

Armitage, who has just completed her final year at Queens' School, maintained her form in the second 50m and managed to split the two older and more experienced Australians, finishing 0.39 seconds behind Hunter.

The semi-finals are due to get underway at 8.28pm at Tollcross Swimming Centre, with the final at 8.26pm tomorrow.
