Having seen three previous attempted sales fall through, Elton John finally sold his majority shareholding in Watford FC to East End businessman and former West Ham United director Jack Petchey.

The outgoing chairman was awarded the status of Life President. Petchey asserted, on the subject of the fee involved, that "I paid too much, and Elton received too little."
